AIR Best Visual Presentation Award

Click here to submit an application for the Best Visual Presentation Award
The AIR Publications Committee invites your submission for the 2008 Best Visual Presentation Award competition. This award recognizes one or more examples of excellence in the visual presentation of data / information in a format other than a traditional scholarly manuscript.

Why this award?
Visual presentations are increasingly important in communicating with higher education audiences. Fueled by advanced technologies and expectations for conveying complex information in accessible formats, high-quality visual presentations have become an essential part of the IR practitioner's repertoire of skills.

2007 Best Visual Presentation Award Winners

Increasing National Capacity for Quality Higher Education - the Case of the Sultanate of Oman by Martin Carroll and Josephine Palermo, Oman Accreditation Council and Australian Universities Quality Agency.

Illuminating the New Students in the Shadows (poster) by Jennifer Minner and Laura Coghlan, Evergreen State College.

These presenters will be recognized at the 2008 Forum Awards Luncheon.

Criteria:
Evaluation of submissions is based on Edward Tufte's definition of graphical excellence as one which "gives the viewer the greatest number of ideas in the shortest time with the least ink in the smallest space." The Awards Committee will give favorable consideration to:
  • Format and design appropriate for the identified audience;
  • Graphical integrity (accurate and complete representation of information);
  • Visual attractiveness (use of color and white space, graphics and other design elements, and readability.)
  • Display of an accessible complexity of detail;
  • Focus on the effective presentation of data and information rather than visual effects for their own sake; and
  • Ability of materials to stand on their own without an accompanying oral presentation or manuscript.
Additional information and tips for visual presentations are available at IR Applications: Best Visual Presentation - Observations from the Award Committee

Eligible materials.
Materials or artifacts used in presentations made at the AIR Forum (including paper presentations, posters, demonstrations, workshops and panel discussions) are eligible for consideration for this award. Such artifacts may take many different forms. They may be used as stand-alone products of research efforts or as adjuncts to communicate the results contained in more traditional scholarly products. The award is based upon the presentation materials submitted for review, not on the presentation itself. Therefore, materials must be able to stand alone, and be read/viewed and generally understood by an audience without an accompanying oral presentation or manuscript.

Materials or artifacts may include:
  • PowerPoint or other computer-based presentation materials
  • Posters
  • Flipcharts
  • 3-D or other tactile models
  • Other formats as appropriate.
To be considered for the Best Visual Presentation Award, materials may be submitted either online or in person at the Forum.

To submit at the Forum, please provide one printed copy of presentation slides or other presentation material. If presentation material is generated from electronic sources, also include a disk with the electronic version. Electronic materials should be clearly labeled as to application program, and must be in a PC-compatible format.

Note that all submissions, whether online or in hard copy, require a description of the audience for whom the presentation was originally created.

All materials must be submitted by NOON TUESDAY, MAY 27th, 2008. Submit printed materials to the AIR Forum Office in Room 601.

If a presenter will not be at the Forum by this time, special arrangements must be made with Sharron Ronco prior to the Forum.

For more information about this award, please contact Sharron Ronco, Best Visual Presentation Committee Chair.

Best Visual Presentation Committee:
The Publications Committee will convene a Best Visual Presentations Committee to evaluate submissions. The Committee is composed of members of the AIR Publications Committee and other AIR members, and will meet Wednesday morning of the 2008 Forum to evaluate submissions.
