July 15, - 19, 2008, Foundations I: The Practice of Institutional Research provides a focused, intensive and structured learning environment that supports new institutional research (IR) practitioners seeking to develop skills in core areas of institutional research. The Institute includes "Using National Data Sets in Institutional Research", an overview of IPEDS and explore the use of the IPEDS College Navigator, Executive Peer Tool, Peer Analysis System (PAS), and the Data Analysis System (DAS). Although the instructors, Valerie Martin Conley and Gayle Fink, will emphasize resources available from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), participants will be introduced to a variety of other national surveys and data sources such as US News, NSSE/CCSSE, the Delaware/Kansas Studies, and the other data sharing consortium.

While you can buy data from numerous vendors, this session will focus on getting data free from the IPEDS data system. Institutions provide a wealth of information to the IPEDS system. This session will show what data are available, how to access them, and how to get free training. There have been many changes introduced by NCES/IPEDS and they will also be briefly covered.

February 15, 2007, The Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities will hold workshop on the federal Data Analysis System (DAS) at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Sponsored by AIR and led by Valerie Martin Conley, the workshop will feature an overview and demonstration of DAS and allow hands-on practice with this powerful online tool. Participants are asked to bring their own laptops with wireless capability (a limited number of laptops are available for checkout that day if reserved in advance). We will review the types of financial data collected, the sources for the data, and potential problems that may be encountered. We will also talk about component units and how to handle systems that are jointly audited.
