Job dutiesSouthern seeks an innovative and dynamic individual to serve as the Director of Institutional Research. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Outreach of Academic Affairs, the position is responsible for the development, management and coordination of data collection and assessment, information products and services. This position oversees functions related to the integrated Banner Student Information System as well as Institutional Research and is the primary liaison for various accreditation agencies that require substantive data and analysis. The Director will work in close partnership with the Director of Assessment and Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management in helping the university meet strategic goals through careful development of statistical models, data analytics, cluster analysis, and data reduction. The Director will have the exciting opportunity to build a data informed culture.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications: A master's degree or above in data analytics, applied mathematics, computer science, statistics, or related field. A minimum of 5 years of experience working with Banner and a related reporting tool(s) in higher education. Proficient use of reporting tools (e.g. Crystal Reports, Brio Query, or WebFocus) for extracting data from Banner is essential. A minimum of 3 years of experience with IPEDS and similar federal and state accountability reporting is critical. A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience at the level of associate director or above, where a working familiarity with all facets of the position description and university operations, is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Demonstrated ability to design, develop and maintain information system products, data collection and analysis, and services in a higher education setting using modern tools (i.e., SPSS, SAS, Tableau, or other).
• Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of personnel in the university community, utilizing good interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Knowledge of organizational principles (for example, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and procedures involved in handling sensitive data including survey responses and personally identifiable information.
• Experience working with internal and external constituents to identify and clarify data requests and select appropriate data, analysis techniques, and deliverables within given timelines.
• Demonstrated ability to present complex findings and recommendations in a clear concise manner both in writing and verbally.
• Demonstrated ability of database development, strategy, and data management.
• Active listening, critical thinking, good interpersonal skills and ability to work on multiple projects concurrently while abiding deadlines.
Essential Functions:
1. Coordinate and achieve effective planning, data collection, assessment, analysis, implementation and maintenance of information system products and services to manage and support the operations of the University and support decision making and planning, as requested by senior management and directed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Be a vital part in helping the university meet strategic goals through careful development of statistical models, data analytics, cluster analysis, and data reduction.
2. Establish and coordinate teams, in collaboration with individual departments and offices, to identify and address their needs for management information products and services.
3. Serve as Southern's representative to the CT State Colleges and Universities Institutional Research Council, and be Southern's primary liaison with the CSCU system office on IR matters and various accreditation agencies. Serve on various committees including Data Standards, Enrollment Operations and Strategic Planning and work closely with the Director for Assessment and Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management.
4. Ensure the ability of the Office of Institutional Research to make rapid and effective use of the information system to support the needs of internal and external clients for decision-critical information on University operations and environmental conditions.
5. Employ effective procedures and methods to regularly assess the performance of the Office and the quality of its services and products, and take corrective and enhancement actions as needed.
