AIR/NCA CASI Co-hosted IPEDS Workshop

The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) are co-hosting a one-day IPEDS Workshop for data providers and users in conjunction with the NCA CASI Annual Conference.  Financial support for this workshop is provided by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).
 
This workshop features these training modules:
 
IPEDS Data as the Public Face of an Institution - This module raises the level of awareness among higher education professionals about the importance of accuracy and consistency in data reported to IPEDS. Examples of real IPEDS data used in the public domain will be incorporated, enabling participants to understand how IPEDS data are used by governmental and non-governmental entities. This module includes presentations, discussions, exercises and demonstrations utilizing IPEDS data tools and resources. Topics include:
  • Data sources (within IPEDS surveys)
  • IPEDS lifecycle
  • Public and institutional use of IPEDS data
  • Data nuances and context for interpreting the data
IPEDS Data and Benchmarking: Supporting Decision Making and Institutional Effectiveness- Module 1 is designed for participants with little to no experience in the area of conducting benchmarking studies or with the IPEDS Data Center. This module introduces the fundamentals of creating benchmarks to measure institutional effectiveness. The module provides an overview of the types of comparison groups that can be constructed using IPEDS data, with examples of appropriate use. Participants will use actual data from the IPEDS Surveys, including the IPEDS Data Feedback Report and Executive Peer Tool. Exercises and resources will demonstrate processes to establish key performance indicators and identify variables to refine comparison groups.

Mr. J. Keith Brown

Keith Brown recently retired from his position as the Associate Vice President for Research and Performance Management for the North Carolina Community College System. His primary responsibility included directing all research, accountability, and evaluation efforts for the NC Community College System. In addition, he served as the IPEDS State Coordinator for the NC community colleges for 12 years and as an IPEDS Trainer for eight years.
Prior to joining the North Carolina Community College System Office, Keith was Dean of Special Projects and Research at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM). Included in the roles he served while at NCSSM were the State Director of the Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics Program and the Director of the Mathematics and Science Education Center at NCSSM. Mr. Brown has also served as faculty at the community college and the high school levels.
Ms. Sandra L. Kinney
Research Manager
Technical College System of Georgia

Sandra Kinney is a Research Manager for the Technical College System of Georgia. Previously, Sandra was an Assistant Director for Institutional Research and Planning at Clayton State College and also worked as a research analyst and fundraiser in the Development Office for Visiting Nurse Health Systems. Sandra has over 16 years of institutional research experience in both public two-year and four-year colleges and is currently serving a three year term with the National Postsecondary Education Cooperative (NPEC) and is a past president of the Georgia Association of Research, Planning and Quality. Sandra serves on several education boards for non-profit organizations in the Atlanta area. She has over 18 years of experience in IPEDS as both an IPEDS Keyholder and State Coordinator.

This workshop is limited to 40 participants. Workshop participants may request up to $500 to offset the cost of travel. Online registration requests must be received by January 25, 2012.
