The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and the Student Aid Researchers Association (SARA) are co-hosting a half-day IPEDS Workshop for data providers and users. Funding for this workshop is provided by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

This workshop features this training module:

IPEDS Data and Benchmarking: Supporting Decision Making and Institutional Effectiveness is designed for participants with little to no experience in the area of conducting benchmarking studies or with the IPEDS Data Center. This module introduces the fundamentals of creating benchmarks to measure institutional effectiveness. The module provides an overview of the types of comparison groups that can be constructed using IPEDS data, with examples of appropriate use. Participants will use actual data from the IPEDS Surveys, Data Feedback Reports, and the Data Center. Exercises and resources will demonstrate processes to establish key performance indicators and identify variables to refine comparison groups.

Mary Ann Coughlin is the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. Across her tenure at Springfield College, Mary Ann has served in a variety of positions; serving as a faculty member, President of the Faculty Senate, and her current administrative position in Academic Affairs. Across these positions, she has supervised academic support services and provided leadership for outcomes assessment initiatives, academic progress reviews, and institutional research. Coughlin is a Past President of AIR and was awarded the 2012 AIR Outstanding Service Award. In addition to being well known within AIR for her training and workshops in the area of statistics, serving as a faculty member for the Foundations Institute and the Statistics Institute, she also contributes significantly to the development of training materials and resources on the use of data tools for IPEDS.

This workshop is limited to 30 participants. Workshop seats are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Seat confirmations are delivered via email on a rolling basis approximately 3 business days after an online seat registration is submitted.

  • Agreement to:
    • Bring a MAC or PC laptop with wireless capability and Microsoft Excel
    • Arrange and pay for travel and hotel as needed
    • Attend the entire workshop and complete the workshop evaluation
    • Notify AIR immediately if unable to attend the workshop
