Name: Abhishek Singh
Title: Research Associate, Institutional Research
Organization: New York Institute of Technology
Can you describe your current role in institutional research and how it supports your institution’s mission?
In my role, I ensure timely completion of federal, state, and external reporting requirements such as IPEDS, NYSED, and U.S. News, etc. I also use analytics, dashboards, and predictive models to support key institutional priorities like student persistence and success. Additionally, I collaborate across departments to analyze survey data to help track and improve student outcomes. By providing timely, accurate insights, I help the institution make data-driven decisions that advance student success.
What sparked your interest in institutional research, and how has your career evolved since then?
I first got interested in institutional research while working as a graduate assistant during my master’s in data science at New York Tech. Being involved in projects that focused on student success made me realize how powerful data can be in helping students and the institution thrive. Since then, I’ve been excited to keep using data to make a real difference in education.
What’s one project or accomplishment in your IR work that you’re especially proud of—and why?
I'm especially proud of the opportunity New York Tech gave me to present at the AIR Forum on using technology to enhance data analysis and visualization in higher education. The presentation was inspired by various data projects I’ve worked on at New York Tech that support student success.
What do you find most rewarding (or enjoyable) about working in IR?
What I really enjoy about working in institutional research is digging into data—making dashboards, analyzing surveys, and doing predictive modeling. I like turning all that info into useful insights that help the school make smarter decisions.
When you’re not working with data, how do you like to spend your time?
When I’m not working with data, I like to relax by listening to music, traveling, going for walks, and reading articles—especially on tech, data, or what’s happening in higher education. It’s a nice way to unwind while still staying curious and inspired.
What’s something about you—personal or professional—that might surprise your colleagues?
Something that might surprise my colleagues is that while I’m friendly and have a lot of great relationships at work, I’m also passionate and enthusiastic about my work. I bring a lot of energy and commitment to my work, and I think that balance helps me connect with people while staying focused on making an impact.
