Foundations II Institute:
The Advanced Practice of Institutional Research

The Association for Institutional Research Foundations II Institute is designed for established institutional research practitioners seeking to advance their career toward senior leadership and administrative positions, as well as for veteran practitioners desiring additional professional development. Topics include strategic planning, information technologies, institutional effectiveness, office management and advanced statistics.

The Foundations II Institute is designed for professionals with two or more years of IR experience. Modules focus on concepts, theories and IR best practices. Faculty members use a combination of lecture, discussion, hands-on activities and small group exercises to illustrate practical applications of the featured methods and strategies.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the Institute, participants will be able to:

  • apply proven technology and tools to improve efficiency of processes, operations, and planning of IR offices;
  • develop a strategic institutional action plan for use on their campus;
  • implement processes for demonstrating institutional effectiveness on their campus;
  • organize and administer a well-run IR office; and
  • inform decision-making through the application of advanced research methods.

Modules:

Institute modules are interesting and challenging. Each module focuses on concepts, theories, and procedures of common IR practices. Institute faculty members provide hands-on exercises that illustrate important and practical uses of the featured methods and strategies.

Participants will attend four modules and will request modules in order of their preference during the process. AIR will make every effort to place participants who register by the priority deadline in their top module choices. Each module is six hours long. The first half of each module is taught in the afternoon, and the second half of each module will commence the following morning. Module choices include:

*Attendees who participate in these modules are required to bring a laptop computer to use in a wireless computer lab that will be set-up onsite. Each laptop must meet the following specifications:

Operating System

• Microsoft® Windows XP (32-bit version)
• Vista (32-bit and 64-bit versions)

Configuration

• Intel or AMD x86 processor running at 1 gigahertz (GHz) or higher
• 512 megabytes (MB) of RAM or more. At least 1 gigabyte (GB) is recommended.
• 450 MB of available hard-disk space
• CD-ROM drive
• Super VGA (800x600) or a higher-resolution monitor
• Wireless internet

Software

• Must be loaded with SPSS (version 16 or higher) software
• Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
