The 2009 Forum theme, World Class Institutional Research, challenges us to learn from each other and our colleagues around the world to improve our theoretical understanding, our methods, our techniques and our practice. To accomplish this, we must share what we know, listen to what others’ know and use the opportunity to challenge our own and other ‘taken for granted’ assumptions about higher education and our role within it.
Higher education is a global enterprise. Building the best possible quality higher education is a critical role for IR practitioners everywhere. Students, faculty and staff with many educational backgrounds arrive to study and work in our countries from all over the world. Immigration, emigration, short and long-term exchanges, study-abroad participation, research collaborations, increasing internet access and ever increasing needs for literacy worldwide mean that all of us encounter global higher education issues even if we never leave home.
What better place to explore international best practices to enhance our own work in institutional research (whatever name it goes by) than in Atlanta, Georgia? This city was the last U.S. site to host the summer Olympics. It hosts the Carter Center and CARE USA, both important international humanitarian organizations. Atlanta also has 18 international sister cities and Mayor Franklin supports a city International Affairs Department.
