Barak and Lisa A. Mets Chapters: 1. Academic Program Review in Planning, Budgeting, and Assessment, by Robert J. Barak and Janet D. Sweeney. This chapter draws on the results of a national study of public and private two- and four-year campuses, and examines the uses of program review in planning, budgeting, and student outcomes assessment. 2. Program Review in Academic Departments, by Lisa A. Mets. The author discusses academic department responses to an institution's program review process and gives recommendations. 3. It analyzes the recommendations from the reviews, the faculty and review committee perceptions, and new directions for a second cycle. 6. Integrating Program Review in Planning and Budgeting: A Systemwide Perspective, by Gertrude M. Eaton and Javier Miyares. This chapter examines the implementation challenges of a data- driven program review process to reallocate resources systemwide. 7. Lessons Learned from Program Review Experiences, by Lisa A. Mets. "For 30 years, ERIC/AE has served as your clearinghouse for journal articles and reports. With this activity, we hope to also be your clearinghouse for commercial books," said the ERIC/AE Director Lawrence Rudner. This is a unique partnership with amazon.com and a growing number of book publishers. The publishers provide ERIC/AE with the latest books on assessment, evaluation, and standards. ERIC/AE reviews the books for their relevance to the target audience, clarity of expression, contribution to practice, usefulness, and accuracy. ERIC/AE then rates the books and provides links to amazon.com. You can order the books on-line through amazon.com at the usual amazon.com price. ERIC/AE invites teachers, administrators, counselors, practitioners, researchers, policymakers, parents, students, and the general public to browse the bookstore and search the catalog for the latest titles on learning styles, grading students, alternative assessment, classroom testing, high- order thinking skills, testing issues, test construction, research methods, program evaluation, educational statistics, survey design, standards, and school reform. ERIC/AE's partners for this new venture include amazon.com, Allyn & Bacon, Bookline Books, Corwin Press, Eye on Education, Harcourt Brace, Jossey-Bass, Sage Publications, Longman, and SkyLight Training and Publishing. As of June 26, 1998 over 200 titles were in the bookstore inventory. The workshop, entitled "Internet Tools for Institutional Researchers," introduced attendees to the ERIC/HE Web site as the gateway to higher education information on the Internet. The American Council on Education's Jaci King rounded out the presentation by demonstrating the Data Analysis System Web (DAS), a site that provides access to U.S. Department of Education survey data. Those of you who couldn't make the trip to the great state of Minnesota, take heart. The workshop, including its extensive list of hyperlinked resources related to higher education, can be found on the ERIC/HE Web site at (http://www.gwu.edu/~eriche/Other/airwrkshp.html).
