Keep it brief, but include the information you think others would like to know. NICOLE CATAPANO is a new AIR member. She recently received her Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Connecticut and is the Director of institutional Research and Planning at Adirondack Community College in Queensbury, New York. Best wishes Nicole! TAMELA M. HEATH is the new Director of Institutional Research and Analysis at Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland. Dr. Heath was formerly Associate Dean of Institutional Research and Curriculum Development at Trinity College in Washington, DC. She received her Ph.D. in Higher Education and Social Change in 1994 from the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Heath's new appointment is as of May 3, 1999. Good luck Tamela. TIM SANDFORD, UNC-Chapel Hill, is no longer Director of Institutional Research. As of May 1 he became Assistant Provost full time with continuing responsibility for records management across the campus and other duties yet to be assigned. For the time being Tim is still in the IR Office so his address, phone, and e-mail have not changed. Lynn Williford, Senior Research Associate and Coordinator of Assessment, is in charge of the IR Office on a day-to-day basis. Congratulations Tim. GORDON HEWITT joined the staff as a Research Analyst in the Office of Institutional Research at Tufts University in April. He is a recent Ph.D. recipient in Higher Education Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where his dissertation research focused on the attitudes and beliefs of faculty members towards graduate student collective bargaining. Prior to coming to Tufts, Gordon worked as an equal opportunity compliance analyst at the University of Wisconsin System and at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and as a compliance officer for the U.S. Department of Labor. Good luck Gordon! DR. RICHARD LIU has left Northeastern Illinois University to become the Director of Institutional Research at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Best wishes in your new position Richard. DR. LARRY O. HUNTER will become Director of Institutional Research Emeritus at the University of Idaho as of July 1, 1999. He has been working toward this position for the past 24 years. Larry plans to continue to live in Moscow and there will be no change to his email address. He hopes to be quite busy the first few months, fishing, golfing, and entertaining his gra= nd- daughters. The very best of luck to you in your retirement years Larry. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEWS =96 Electronic Publishing Web Sites * * Eric Dey, University of Michigan, * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This message is a first follow-up from our meeting in Seattle, where I mentioned a couple of web sites that might contain information / models for some of the issues we've been struggling with re: electronic publishing. The first site is for Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.net), an effort to make public domain documents available as electronic texts. I see this effort as somewhat similar to Larry Jones' AIR Archives project, and as a result there may be information useful to help recruit and direct volunteers to support Larry's fine efforts. You may also find the Gutenberg site useful for your own direct use: You can download their e-texts for fre= e, and these can provide you with something enjoyable to read on your Palm Pil= ot or laptop while stuck in airport terminals and the like. Personally, I can'= t wait until Tom Wolfe's new book "A man in full" is available in e-text, as I can never convince myself that I'm strong enough to take all 742 pages wi= th me on the road! The second site is the National Academy Press (http://www.nap.edu), which makes its books available for free in several electronic formats for both o= n-line reading and downloading. Books can also be ordered in printed and bound edi= tions, at a discount on the list price. Later this summer, I will contact the NAP = to inquire about their experiences with this distribution method. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PUBLIATION NEWS =96 NCES New Monthly Education Indicator * *{ HYPERLINK "mailto:sgertel@garnet.acns.fsu.edu" } NCES, * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NCES has just released it's June, 1999 education indicator of the month.
