Frost CHAPTERS 1. Organizations, Culture, and Teams: Links Toward Genuine Change, by Susan H. Frost and Theresa W. Gillespie The culture of an organization helps determine the degree to which a new way of working is adopted and used. Team-based decision making depends on organizational beliefs supporting the idea that change strengthens organizational goals. This chapter explores culture, effectiveness, characteristics of lasting change, and teams at work in the higher education arena. 2. Fostering Teamwork and teams from the Institutional Research Office, by Peter Hurst, Michael Matier, and Clint Sidle By practicing group dynamics and facilitation, institutional researchers can help college and university decision-makers make decisions that are grounded in the support of institutional constituents. This chapter explores the many benefits of expanding the IR repertoire to include these valuable skills. 3. Thinking Differently About Academic Departments: The Academic Department as a Team, by Peter Eckel Eckel presents a case study that compares teamwork in the academic department to two conceptual models of teams-self-managing teams from industry and presidential teams from colleges and universities. 4. Experimenting with Models of Faculty Collaboration: Factors That Promote Their Success, by Shaw Jacqueline Bohen and James Stiles Although interdisciplinary approaches to complex problems are not new to Harvard University, there is new interest in structured faculty collaboration. This chapter explores some of the barriers to faculty teamwork, investigates models that enable interaction outside traditional departmental confines, and examines some ways that universities and colleges can encourage similar work. 5. Trying Transformations: Implementing Team-Oriented Forms of Leadership, by Adrianna Kezar Environmental conditions and diverse populations make new approaches to leadership necessary. This chapter presents a case study of one college adjusting to team-oriented leadership and illustrates implementation problems the college faced. The author also presents new methods that contribute to realizing team oriented forms of leadership. 6. Using Teams to Change a culture: Developmental Advising at Valencia Community College, by Ronald B. Nelson This chapter describes the team-centered developmental advising project implemented at Valencia Community College as part of a larger effort to create a learning-centered institution. When academic advisers are trained in the principles and practices of team-centered developmental advising, and when interventions create the expectation for student success, then advisers are best equipped to teach students to approach their education in purposeful ways. 7. Evolution or Revolution: Creating a Team-Based Organization, by Duane W. Cross While universities and colleges debate the value of teams, businesses use teams as a matter of survival. Motivated by competition and high cost, business leaders have created a new culture based on shared risk and reward. This chapter explores the ways in which organizations use teams to adapt and prosper. 8. Using Teams in Higher Education: Resources for Researchers and Practitioners, by Susan H. Frost and Pankaj Bidani This chapter identifies key resources for understanding and applying teamwork to higher education settings. Topics covered by these resources include: organizing concepts for effective team building, administrative change strategies, case studies of teams at work, and lessons in the business context. A number of AIR members have asked what criteria are used by Professional Development Services to identify and select faculty for the various types of instructional experiences. The answer is quite simple - expertise PLUS prior relevant instructional experience. The primary evaluative criteria used at the national AIR level revolve around three themes: (1) subject matter expertise, (2) demonstrated teaching effectiveness and (3) prior instructional experience with AIR type professionals in AIR or AIR affiliated settings. In other words, to be a faculty member at a pre-Forum workshop, an individual must not only develop an effective written proposal but should also have an established track record of successful presentations and/or workshop experiences at AIR State or Regional Associations. Professional Development Services views the Institutes to be at the pinnacle of the instructional pyramid offered by the Association. Institute faculty are specifically invited by the director of a given institute based primarily on that individual's history of prior successful instructional experiences at local, regional, and national settings. Not only are the institute faculty experts in the art of the subject matter, but also, and even more importantly, are able and enthusiastic about helping others to learn that material. So what do you have to do to become a pre-Forum workshop presenter or even a faculty member at one of the institutes? The answer is that you need to begin to build a progressively stronger portfolio of relevant presentations and workshops. Developing and honing teaching skills and presentation techniques at the state and regional levels is a great beginning. You can take the next major step by becoming a pre-Forum workshop presenter. In almost all cases, institute faculty will have had a long history of successful presentations and workshops, including pre-Forum workshops. Based on participant evaluations, this approach to quality control has been an extremely effective one. If you have any additional questions about the faculty identification process, please feel free to contact Paul Duby at pduby@nmu.edu * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEWS FROM THE INFORMATION HIGHWAY – NCES Projects With Partners * *{ HYPERLINK "mailto:sgertel@garnet.acns.fsu.edu" } NCES, * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NCES has just redesigned an area of our website dedicated to "Projects With Partners". The 2000 AIR/CASE Colloquium will examine concerns related to the "New Demographics of Philanthropy." This year's Colloquium co-chairs are James Trainer, Director of Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS) and Clayton Pheasant, Vice President, University Advancement, Marywood University. The Colloquium should be of particular interest to fund raising and institutional researchers and administrators and decision makers who use such research in their work. The Colloquium is limited to 200 participants. A CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS Papers and panels directly related to the demographics of philanthropy are sought from researchers and practitioners for presentation at the Colloquium and for publication in the Colloquium Proceedings. The paper or panel proposals and presentations should speak directly to at least two of the following objectives: A. Identify research and/or practice issues related to one of the topics listed below. B. Review research and/or practice relating to the particular topic chosen. C. Discuss methodological issues related to the relevant research and/or practice. D. Present previously unpublished, exemplary research and/or practice related to the topic. E. Identify needed research on the topic or practical methodological innovations relevant to the topic chosen. Each paper or panel presentation should address one or more of the following topics: 1. The impact of changing demographics on giving 2. Employing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze giving 3. A Bull Market, new wealth and giving 4. Career and life-stage research to understand and support giving 5. The effect of increased tuition and student debt on philanthropy 6. Women in philanthropy 7. Giving by minority group members 8. Examining differences in giving across sector and institutional types 9. Class year and affinity and affiliation group giving 10. Measuring the impact of in-kind support In selecting papers and panels for presentations, and subsequently for publication, preference will be given to individuals who include (a) exemplary research that can be adopted or adapted by other researchers and/or practitioners; (b) evaluations of current research and practice with advice on improving methodology; (c) data or methods that can be used by researchers and practitioners in establishing comparative frames of reference for their own institutions; or, (d) discussion of empirically-tested theory or proposed methodology related to determining and reporting giving. Paper proposals are due August 15, 1999. Presentations will be 30 minutes long and working drafts of all accepted papers should be available at the Colloquium.
