Assessment: IR's Role in Telling the Student Learning Story
Assessment illuminates the core of the higher education enterprise—that is, assessment helps colleges and universities tell the story of student learning. In order to explore how well we are doing in this arena, eAIR spoke with George Kuh, Chancellor's Professor of Higher Education Emeritus at Indiana University and Co-Principal Investigator of the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) at University of Illinois. Kuh explains that one of the greatest challenges for chief academic officers is figuring out how to aggregate information from assessment activities at the classroom and program levels to create full pictures of student learning at the institutional level. Board Considers AIR's Role in Universal IR Issues

By Jennifer Brown
AIR Immediate Past President

As you have seen in previous Board Corners, we have been working to fulfill our role in gathering the voice of the members to help the Board assess the current Association Ends and make adjustments if needed. The Ends policies developed by the Board are what set the direction and activities of the CEO and staff. They are an important component of the performance evaluation by the Board, on your behalf.

All this is to say that we have received the results from McKinley Advisors who interviewed AIR members who are early-career professionals and directors of early-career professionals. Thanks to all who participated. MORE

Organizing for Evidence-Based Decision Making and Improvement

Christina Leimer (Change, July/August 2012, pp. 45-51)

Reviewed by Jonathan D. Fife

In Organizing for Evidenced-Based Decision Making and Improvement, Christina Leimer provides an analysis of the changing role that institutional research offices are beginning to play in higher education institutions' efforts to create environments that value data-driven and evidence-based decision making. Leimer details the dilemma concerning the role of IR offices. Is the purpose of this administrative office only to assemble data to which others react (a decision making passive role)? Or is the role of IR to identify, collect, and present data that facilitates action (an active role)? MORE

Data Validation in Excel

Provided by Jinchun Yu, Assistant Director of Data Analysis and Management, The University of Alabama.

Institutional researchers receive or collect data from a variety of sources. While some of us clean the data afterwards, there are ways to limit the input by restricting the end user on data types and range values. The Excel Data Validation guarantees that each data value you enter, have entered, or will enter, will be correct and accurate. If you have hundreds of rows, scrolling to quickly review the data may not be the most efficient way to ensure its accuracy. Also, if you receive a data file, you can make sure the data is within a specific range or qualifies to the set criteria. This feature is particularly useful when you are verifying data or requesting other users to input data. This tip was tested using Excel 2010 on the Windows platform. MORE
