What’s on Your To-Do List? IR’s Top Priorities for 2014-2015

Higher education continues to be pressured to report information to a wide variety of stakeholders to use for decisions. Campuses are responding to increased requests from federal and state education departments, senior campus leaders, and even current and prospective students. Institutional research is at the center of these information and reporting needs.

The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) conducted a survey in fall 2014 to determine members’ top IR priorities for the 2014-2015 academic year.

2014-2015 College/University IR Office Top Priorities
We asked respondents to name the top two priorities for their IR office. We coded the data and found:
  • 40% of respondents’ priorities related to planning and decision support (e.g., conducting retention and graduation rate research projects, supporting the efforts of institutional strategic planning, and conducting cost analyses) MORE

2014-2015 President
For those members who have already voted – Way to Go! For those who have not, there is still time to cast your vote for new 2015-2016 AIR Board and Nominations and Elections Committee members.

The election system closes at 11:59 p.m. (EST) on March 2, 2015.

Pharmacy Education
By Jamie Taylor, Research Analyst, and Danielle Taylor, Associate Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy
The Institutional Research and Effectiveness Department at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) created our association’s first infographic with the goal of making our IR data more easily digestible and accessible to both our member institutions and the general public.

This project began by looking at our data warehouse to see what types of ”data stories” we might be able to tell about pharmacy education. MORE

SPECIAL FEATURE

Learning from our Members
Last fall, AIR’s Executive Office staff embarked on a journey to learn more about the work done by the members we serve. As only a quarter of us have a background in IR, this had the makings of a rather long journey. However, thanks to the 203 members who shared with us, we now have a better understanding of the day-to-day duties of AIR members.

Each participating AIR staff member was given a list of randomly selected members to email and request time to talk via phone, for approximately 20 minutes. The goal for each staff member was to “interview” 14 members over a 10-week period. During the call, we asked each member to “talk about the schedule you anticipate for your next full day of work. What meetings will you attend? What tasks and activities will you work on?” We took notes during the calls and then compiled and analyzed the responses. MORE

Qualtrics Drill Down
By Steven Graunke, Director of Student Data, Analysis, and Evaluation, Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis
Many institutional research offices have taken advantage of web survey administration tools because it is easy to design, administer, and collect survey responses within these systems.

The system we use at IUPUI, Qualtrics, offers a wide variety of options for automatic reports that can generate valuable information and save considerable time for analysts. MORE
