JUNE 2012 NEWSLETTER, VOL. 32, ISSUE 6 | A SERVICE OF AIR SINCE 1987
'Defining IR' Launched at Record-Setting Forum

AIR welcomed 1,933 participants to New Orleans for the largest Forum in the Association's history. The 2012 Forum opened with a weekend of pre-conference workshops and masters seminars, and was followed by a full complement of professional development opportunities, including educational events, concurrent sessions, a poster gallery, and the exhibit hall.

Jane V. Wellman, Executive Director of the National Association of System Heads and Founding Director of the Delta Project on Postsecondary Costs, Productivity, and Accountability, delivered an opening keynote address that energized conference participants. Attendees' shared learning experiences were capped by a closing address delivered by Patrick T. Terenzini, Distinguished Professor of Higher Education and Senior Scientist, Emeritus, in the Department of Education Policy Studies and the Center for the Study of Higher Education at The Pennsylvania State University. Details about the Forum are available in the program book.

The Forum introduced "Defining IR," which will be the Association's theme for the next two years. AIR is focused on clearly defining the scope of the field of institutional research, as described in a letter from Randy L. Swing, Executive Director. This edition of eAIR highlights many of the features and experiences of the 2012 Forum, but the work of "Defining IR" speaks to all AIR members and the field of institutional research as a whole. The coming year will offer a variety of opportunities to explore this topic as we learn together and engage with professional development content in person and online.

In her welcome letter to Forum participants, 2011-2012 AIR President Jennifer Brown stated that "AIR members continue to be among the most generous professionals in higher education. Our focus on the value of higher education and on our critical role in contributing to improvements in learning, operational practices, access, efficiencies, and data quality and integrity lend themselves to the culture of shared learning within the Association." The energy of the 2012 Forum set the stage for the year to come as we charge ahead in our quest of "Defining IR."

Note: The "word cloud" above illustrates the 75 most frequently used words in 2012 AIR Forum educational session titles. The larger the word, the more times it was used.

Thoughts on Forum and New Board Year

By Julie Carpenter-Hubin
2012 - 2013 AIR President

It was wonderful to see so many friends and colleagues at the Forum in New Orleans! I hope that those of you who attended were able to take a break from the rich array of presentations and enjoy the amazing food and hospitality of our host city.

Thank you to the hundreds of AIR members who volunteered behind the scenes to make the Forum happen, and thank you to everyone who presented their work or led a discussion.

Last, but not least, kudos to Randy Swing and all of the staff at the AIR Executive Office for orchestrating the Forum so beautifully!

Last year, the Board spent much of our time crafting the Ends Policies that are the foundation of our governance structure.  MORE
