e-AIR Newsletter March 2013

MARCH 2013 NEWSLETTER, VOL. 33, ISSUE 3 | A SERVICE OF AIR SINCE 1987
Research in Higher Education Special Forum Issue Available for All AIR Members
The Special Forum Issue of Research in Higher Education features five scholarly papers presented at the 2012 AIR Forum.

Patrick Terenzini's "On the Nature of Institutional Research" Revisited: Plus ça Change…? served as the framework for his closing keynote address in New Orleans, and now all AIR members can benefit from his reflection on whether the "three tiers of institutional intelligence" he developed 20 years ago are still relevant today.

The Special Forum Issue also features the papers honored with the 2012 Charles F. Elton Best Paper Award — Gary R. Pike's NSSE Benchmarks and Institutional Outcomes: A Note on the Importance of Considering the Intended Uses of a Measure in Validity Studies and Stephen R. Porter's Self-Reported Learning Gains: A Theory and Test of College Student Survey Response. Read more about the articles included in this issue and access the journal contents.

The Practice of IR Touches Many Areas

By Julie Carpenter-Hubin
2012- 2013 AIR President

Greetings, colleagues!

I have been trying unsuccessfully to come up with an antonym for "pigeonhole" that might describe a way to classify institutional researchers. We are not easy to sort into tidy bins. Our colleagues who focus primarily on assessment are often involved in survey administration and reporting, and institutional researchers with responsibility for strategic planning may also develop metrics to assure that there is accountability for the plans.

Faculty who focus on institutional research as an academic study inform the work of practitioners – no IR practitioner would think of conducting a faculty salary study or measuring student success without reviewing the work of our faculty IR colleagues. Offices charged with data reporting help others use those data to understand trends and comparative data from other institutions. And when it comes to types of positions, we hold a range that covers everything from entry-level analysts to institution president!

My thinking about our diverse responsibilities has to do with the Board's mission to represent the voice of the members. I had something of an epiphany at our February Board meeting.  MORE

Setting up a Simple Interactive Dashboard Using Excel 2010 "Slicers"

Provided by Jim Fergerson, Director of Institutional Research and Assessment, Carleton College, Northfield, Minn.

Excel 2010 introduces a new "slicer" feature that makes it much easier to interact with and filter data contained in pivot tables. Slicers make it easier to visualize what fields are being filtered, and they make it easy to set up a simple dashboard to explore your data. Furthermore, when sharing data with others, your collaborators may find that the slicer’s visual "button interface" for selecting information is much more intuitive than interacting with standard pivot tables. Journeys to Institutional Research: Unexpected Paths

Amanda Yale introduced Kevin McCarthy to institutional research when she recognized that his interests and talents would be a good fit for the field. Together, they discuss the importance of collaboration in a "culture of performance" — the type of campus collaboration that helped Slippery Rock University achieve significant goals and also shaped the paths that led them to IR. Interactive Learning Online at Public Universities: Evidence from Randomized Trials

William G. Bowen, Matthew M. Chingos, Kelly A. Lack, and Thomas I. Nygren (Ithaka S+R, 2012)

Reviewed by Sally Jackson

Interactive Learning Online at Public Universities: Evidence from Randomized Trials is not quite a policy essay, but it is not a typical research article, either. The authors are associated with Ithaka S+R, which sponsored the study. Ithaka S+R, like JSTOR and Portico, is part of ITHAKA, a not-for-profit strategic consulting and research organization that focuses on the use of technology in higher education.  MORE
