AIR Survey: IR Professionals' Work Patterns
AIR is interested in IR professionals' work patterns, and a recent survey explored the topic of telecommuting and the frequency with which people take work home in the evenings and on weekends. Nearly 60% of survey respondents take work home with them on some or most of the days they also work on campus and/or weekends.

Telecommuting is of interest to many survey respondents: 68% have the desire to telecommute, 57% telecommute some of the time, and 3% telecommute most or all of the time. Of those who telecommute on a regular basis, some work for colleges or universities close to their homes, and some work for institutions in different regions or states. Many respondents explained that telecommuting would be desirable if it were an option provided by their employers. The ability to work from home is appealing because it would allow more quiet time to focus, increase productivity, provide flexibility, minimize time spent commuting, and decrease gasoline expenditures. Other respondents were not interested in telecommuting because they find that they are more productive in their campus offices, it is easier to manage employees when physically present, they need to be available for in-person meetings, and they prefer to keep their work and home lives separate.

Some AIR members work for public institutions in states that do not allow employees to telecommute. Others commented that telecommuting is not an option because of institutional technology challenges, including concerns about data security. Additional variables that affect the desirability of telecommuting include campus culture, personal preferences for work environments, and climate (specifically the number and severity of bad weather days). Despite different perspectives about the idea of telecommuting, many respondents expressed interest in schedules that allow for telecommuting as-needed or the combination of telecommuting and campus-based work.

Using Quality Benchmarks for Assessing and Developing Undergraduate Programs

Jossey-Bass (2010)/ By Dana S. Dunn, Maureen A. McCarthy, Suzanne C. Baker, and Jane S. Halonen

Reviewed by Marv Noltze

The authors of Using Quality Benchmarks for Assessing and Developing Undergraduate Programs have extensive experience and bring considerable authority to bear on the topic of program development. The range and depth of their experience is evident in the book's tone and in the specificity provided.

Undergraduate program quality - within and across institutions - spans a wide range. Consequently, there is a need for a common set of benchmarks to focus discussions about evaluation. The authors of this book highlight a pattern of issues related to program health, which they categorize into eight areas or domains: program climate, accountability and assessment matters, student learning outcomes, student development, curriculum, faculty characteristics, program resources, and administrative support. Merging Files Using SPSS

Oftentimes, we merge data to add variables from different sources, such as tables or files, into one table or file. Using SPSS to merge files (i.e., to add variables) is very useful. However, the key to merging two data files in SPSS lies in how the variables were defined and the duplication of the variables. Before merging two files to add variables to a dataset in SPSS, confirm the following. MORE
