The Quality of National Data: IR Professionals' Ratings
Can you trust national data? Are the data available to institutional researchers reliable? AIR asked a random sample of members to rate the quality of 11 large-scale data sets often used in IR studies. Quality was defined as the degree to which data are complete, robust, and accurate. Opinions were shared by 151 AIR members (a response rate of 31%). Nearly all survey respondents know IPEDS data well enough to have opinions about quality—it stands out as a star among the data sets reviewed in that it is well-known and its quality is rated as very high or high by 66% of respondents. Respondents also know and have opinions about two U.S. News sources: Best Colleges and World's Best Universities. However, these data received the lowest marks of all sources reviewed. Change in Governance Has Been Worthwhile Journey

By Julie Carpenter-Hubin
2012-2013 AIR President

I hope you are as excited about the upcoming Forum as I am! One of the highlights this year is the screening of the film “First Generation,” the story of four high school students – an inner-city athlete, a small-town waitress, a Samoan warrior dancer, and the daughter of migrant field workers – who set out to break the cycle of poverty and bring hope to their families and communities by pursuing a college education.

Following the screening, viewers are invited to join the filmmakers and students from the film for discussion and a question-and-answer period. MORE

The College Advantage: Weathering the Economic Storm

Anthony P. Carnevale, Tamara Jayasundera, and Ban Cheah Georgetown Public Policy Institute (2012)

Reviewed by Michelle Kiec

The College Advantage: Weathering the Economic Storm seeks to explain changes in workforce demand through the Great Recession and subsequent recovery. Using data from the Current Population Survey (CPS), the report examines employment trends of three categories—highest education level, gender, and industry classification—against selected ideas circulated in the popular press—men lost more jobs than women, the value of a college education is degraded, and an oversupply of underemployed highly educated workers exists. Interview with Robert A. Schwartz

Robert A. Schwartz is Professor of Higher Education, Chair of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, and Director of the IR Certificate Program at Florida State University.

Interview by Leah Ewing Ross

eAIR: What is your brief “elevator ride” explanation for why participation in an IR certificate program is valuable?

It is hard to think of a position in higher education at any level or at any type of institution that is not touched by IR. Regardless of what a person wants to do—from working with students, to fundraising, to academic research, and even management positions—you have to be able to interpret, understand, and analyze data, especially from your own institution. For example, using IPEDS to compare your institution to others gives you a whole different perspective, alerts you to changes in the environment and to areas for concern, and highlights areas of potential growth and expansion. Using the Camera Function in Excel

Provided by Angela Henderson, Associate Vice Chancellor for Institutional Research, Planning, and Assessment, Keiser University

The camera tool allows you to take a snapshot of any selected range of data, table, or graph, and paste it as a linked picture in Excel. The pasted snapshot can be formatted and resized using picture tools and will update automatically with any changes made to the original data source. Linked data ranges can also be copied and pasted into Word and PowerPoint documents, though with less flexibility. MORE
