2014 AIR Forum: What’s on Your IR Agenda?
One way to explore what’s on the minds of institutional researchers is to look at conference proposals. The AIR Forum always features a wide range of topics because IR is a broad field.

For fun, we captured the first 10 of the 546 proposals submitted for the 2014 Forum to take the temperature of IR and anticipate topics of interest at the conference in Orlando. MORE

Opportunity Knocks…What’s Your Answer?
Just Say “Yes”
By Sandi Bramblett
2013-2014 AIR President
My 8-year old son caught the “Knock-Knock” joke bug, which means that life in the Bramblett household has become one big question, followed by a series of more questions. Our exchanges go something like this:

Son: "Knock-knock!"
Me: "Who's there?"
Son: "I am."
Me: "I am who?"
Son: "Don't you know who you are?"

He then collapses with giggles because I have once again been caught “falling for it.” This has been quite entertaining and has brought back some great memories. How often do we, as institutional researchers, answer a question with another question?

One of the many things that binds higher education professionals together is curiosity. As practitioners, we have access to a lot of data and yet we don’t always put that data to work for us. MORE

Flows of Dollars Within a University
By John Leonard, Associate Dean, Finance and Administration, College of Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology
I gave a presentation on the flow of dollars within the university to one of our department-level advisory boards. This particular audience included many engineering grads now serving as CFOs and COOs of large supply-chain and logistics companies, so I developed a presentation that was both visually appealing and would convey the complexity of fund-based accounting within a large research university. Below are two screen shots of PowerPoint slides I created using Sankey diagrams.

Each visual display combines sources of dollars (e.g., tuition, state appropriation, sponsored, foundation, and other funds) with IPEDS programs (e.g., instruction, research, student aid, plant, etc.) and destinations of funds within the university (e.g., business units, colleges and schools/departments) into a single colorful chart. Merging Two Worksheets with AbleBits Excel Add-In
By Barry Nagle, Managing Partner/Senior Researcher, Evaluation and Action Research Associates
Data management is a critical research function. I frequently search for tools that limit the time it takes to manipulate data so I can focus more on analysis and results interpretation. Several Excel add-ins have proven to be helpful tools that increase work efficiency. In my work, the AbleBits Merge Tables Wizard has been one of the more helpful add-ins. MORE
