2012 ECAR Study of Analytics in Higher Education

Analytics is a growing part of higher education vernacular. Questions abound: What is it? How is it defined? Are IR professionals expected to be masters of analytics? Is it a buzzword or a way of doing business? In August 2012, the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) issued a report entitled "Analytics in Higher Education: Benefits, Barriers, Progress, and Recommendations."

The report emphasizes that "analytics itself is not the end goal. Rather, analytics is a tool used in addressing strategic problems or questions."

Visit with Gates Foundation Inspires

By Julie Carpenter-Hubin
2012- 2013 AIR President

Greetings from the Board. I mentioned in my last column that we were holding our fall Board meeting in Seattle, and that we would have the opportunity to visit with staff from the Gates Foundation as part of that meeting. We had a terrific experience.

They reminded us of Stephen Covey's admonition to "begin with the end in mind," which can be so easy to forget when we get caught up in the day-to-day processes and tasks at hand.  MORE

Getting to Know Chris Mullin

Chris Mullin is the Program Director for Policy Analysis at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). In an interview with Marlene Clapp, Chris discusses his work in the policy arena and highlights the importance of engaging in professional development throughout one’s career. He also offers suggestions for individuals interested in working in the policy arena: "Stay curious, learn to rely on primary documents as opposed to summaries, read 'Politics and the English Language' in George Orwell's Why I Write, invest in yourself by attending various meetings to meet new people and workshops to keep your skills current, and spend a lot of time familiarizing yourself with datasets." Getting to Know William Knight

William Knight serves as Executive Director of Institutional Effectiveness at Ball State University. In a conversation with Jolene Pastir, he reflects on his career, shares what inspires him, and offers insight for new IR professionals. Bill feels strongly that in order to find success in this field, individuals should "maintain (or get!) a sense of humor" and "develop at least one non-higher-education interest in order to maintain perspective and perhaps sanity." He also urges individuals to "read at least one non-IR, non-higher education book or attend one outside meeting, webinar, etc. each year...to learn from other perspectives." MORE

Using R as a Calculator

This tech tip was provided by Gary R. Moser, Planning and Research Associate II, California State University, East Bay.

R is a powerful programming language and environment for data analysis that is well-suited to the wide variety of data manipulation and analytic tasks performed by IR professionals. However, getting started can be daunting. R works, looks, and feels quite different than SAS, SPSS, or Excel. MORE
