 #35 Update #1 Title: Comments Requested for Proposed IPEDS Changes Prepared: May 2007 Summary In a May 30, 2007, Federal Register notice, the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) announced it is seeking comments on a set of proposed changes to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) for 2007-08 through 2009-10. Comments regarding burden and/or the collection activity requirements should be electronically mailed to ICDocketMgr@ed.gov by June 29, 2007. Current Status The set of proposed changes is significantly reduced from those announced in January (see AIR Alert #35). The current proposed changes include a preliminary plan for implementing the proposed new categories and definitions for race and ethnicity reporting for enrollment, completions, graduation rates, and human resources (see AIR Alert #14 Update 2). There will be no changes in Race/Ethnicity reporting for 2007-08 and changes in future years are dependent upon the Department of Education issuing its final guidance, which it has yet to do. Additional changes may be proposed for 2008-09 and 2009-10 (e.g., changes to IPEDS Finance based on suggestions from a recent Technical Review Panel and changes to how first-professional degrees are reported) in the future, and will have to submit to OMB for approval at that time. Implications for Institutions Individuals in the institutional offices responsible for IPEDS reporting should be notified of the proposed changes. Institutions should consider coordinating any comments that might be submitted to the OMB. Timeline May 30, 2007 - Federal Register notice announcing request for comments.
