2009 National Science Foundation Webinars

The National Science Foundation's Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS) designs, supports, and directs periodic surveys as well as a variety of other data collections and research projects. On this website, you will find AIR-produced videos to assist you in learning more about two SRS databases: SESTAT and WebCASPAR.

SESTAT, which stands for Scientists and Engineers Statistical Data System, captures information about employment, educational, and demographic characteristics of scientists and engineers in the United States. The data are collected from three surveys: the National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG), the National Survey of Recent College Graduates (NSRCG), and the Survey of Doctorate Recipients (SDR).

The WebCASPAR database provides easy access to a large body of statistical data resources for science and engineering at U.S. academic institutions. WebCASPAR emphasizes science and engineering, but its data resources also provide information on non-S&E fields and higher education in general.

For more information on Science and Engineering Statistics visit the SRS Homepage and the Survey descriptions.

SESTAT

SESTAT
Scientists and Engineers Statistical Data System

The Scientists and Engineers Statistical Data System (SESTAT) is an integrated data collection effort capturing information about employment, educational, and demographic characteristics of scientists and engineers in the United States. The data are collected from three national surveys of this population: the National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG), the National Survey of Recent College Graduates (NSRCG), and the Survey of Doctorate Recipients (SDR). The data collected from these three surveys are combined in a comprehensive, integrated database: SESTAT. Data are available for download, or through the SESTAT Data Tool, which allows users to generate custom data tables.

WebCASPAR

WebCASPAR
Integrated Science and Engineering Resources Data System

WebCASPAR is a database system containing information about academic science and engineering resources and is newly available on the World Wide Web. Included in the database is information from several of SRS's academic surveys plus information from a variety of other sources, including the National Center for Education Statistics. The system is designed to provide multiyear information about individual fields of S&E at individual academic institutions. The system provides the user with opportunities to select variables of interest and to specify whether and how information should be aggregated. Information can be output in hard copy form or in Lotus, Excel or SAS formats for additional manipulation by the researcher.
