IPEDS Workshop

The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges (PCCC) are co-hosting a one-day IPEDS Workshop for data providers and users. Financial support for this workshop is provided by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

This workshop features these training modules:

IPEDS Data as the Public Face of an Institution- This module raises the level of awareness among higher education professionals about the importance of accuracy and consistency in data reported to IPEDS. Examples of real IPEDS data used in the public domain will be incorporated, enabling participants to understand how IPEDS data are used by governmental and non-governmental entities. This module includes presentations, discussions, exercises and demonstrations utilizing IPEDS data tools and resources. Topics include:

  • Data sources (within IPEDS surveys)
  • IPEDS lifecycle
  • Public and institutional use of IPEDS data
  • Data nuances and context for interpreting the data

IPEDS Data and Benchmarking: Supporting Decision Making and Institutional Effectiveness- Module 1 introduces the fundamentals of creating benchmarks to measure institutional effectiveness. The module provides an overview of the types of comparison groups that can be constructed using IPEDS data, with examples of appropriate use. Participants will use actual data from the IPEDS surveys, including the IPEDS Data Feedback Report and Executive Peer Tool. Exercises and resources will demonstrate processes to establish key performance indicators and identify variables to refine comparison groups.

Jennifer Dunseath is currently the Chief Institutional Research Officer at Framingham State College in Framingham, Massachusetts. Her career in Institutional Research spans over 19 years and includes positions at Kettering University and the University of Michigan in Flint. Jennifer’s education includes a Master of Arts Degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology.

Jennifer has been involved with IPEDs training since 2000. She has made multiple presentations at regional and national conferences. Jennifer has held leadership positions as the Chair of the MiAIR Steering Committee, and the MiAIR Liaison to AIR.

Ms. Sandra L. Kinney

Sandra Kinney has over fifteen years experience in institutional research and is currently a research manager at the Technical College System of Georgia. Previously, she served as a Project Manager in Development at Visiting Nurse Health Systems and as Assistant Director for Institutional Research and Planning at Clayton State University. Ms. Kinney has IPEDS experience as both a state-wide coordinator and also an institution level keyholder. She was a member of the 2008-2009 Finance Webinar Development Team.

This workshop is limited to 40 participants. Workshop participants may request up to $500 to offset the cost of travel.

  • Brief description of your role at your institution and, if applicable, use of IPEDS data. (not required for Keyholders or System/State Coordinators)
  • Brief description of how the specific modules offered at the workshop will benefit you. (not required for Keyholders or System/State Coordinators)
  • Travel support request, if applicable (up to $500.00)
  • Agreement to:
    • Bring a MAC or PC laptop with wireless capability
    • Arrange my own travel and hotel as needed
    • Attend the entire workshop and complete the workshop evaluation
