Job Duties: The Institutional Effectiveness Assessment Specialist‘s (IEA) major responsibility is to assist academic and nonacademic departments in establishing and implementing outcomes assessment plans relevant to meeting each unit’s mission and strategic goals. The IEA Specialist collaborates with and provides technical assistance to administrators and faculty to develop academic assessment plans and to implement these plans for all university academic programs, both undergraduate and graduate as well as nonacademic programs. Assists in evaluating the outcomes assessment activities of the university community to meet institutional strategic goals and accreditation requirements. May be called on to assist the IR Staff in collecting and interpreting data for use by the university, as well as other governmental and accreditation agencies involved in the planning, policy formulation, decision making, assessment and administration of institutions of higher education, such as the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Works under the direction of the Director of Institutional Research, Planning and Assessment who reports to the Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness.
EXAMPLES: Provides technical assistance to faculty and staff to identify and implement appropriate and ongoing program and university-level outcomes and measures relevant to and in support of student learning in both academic and nonacademic units. Provides assistance in the interpretation of assessment results to better inform decision-making and actions to be taken to enhance program and institutional effectiveness. Maintains databases documenting assessment plans, all implementation activities, and the achievement of program and university goals. Maintains current knowledge of assessment research and best practices and related institutional effectiveness issues and requirements of external accreditation agencies including SACS and various program accrediting organizations. Participates in professional development activities. Provides support to the Director in an ongoing effort to assist the university and administration in coordination and management of all institutional effectiveness activities at the university. Interacts with the campus community and shares relevant information regarding assessment data collection, as well as the maintenance of assessment databases, and analysis to support the development of an integrated institutional effectiveness system. Integrates assessment activities and results with accreditation processes, especially institutional accreditation. Qualifications: Education: Education: Bachelor’s degree in related field (e.g., education, psychology, sociology, management). Graduate degree preferred.
Experience: Preference is for professional experience in higher education including student assessment focusing on improving student success.
Knowledge: Requires knowledge in the area of institutional effectiveness including the creation of outcomes, assessment methods and instruments, as well as data analysis, and utilization of reporting results. Should be familiar with the measurement of student outcomes and the examination of the measures in the context of student and institutional goals and quantitative and qualitative characteristics of academic and nonacademic programs. A good knowledge base in statistics and research methodology. Must be computer literate, familiar with current state of the art software to include databases, spreadsheets, presentations, (Banner) server-based queries, and statistical software and be comfortable in either a mainframe or personal computer environment. Ability to write quality reports documenting qualitative and quantitative data analyses and offering appropriate interpretation and conclusions. Ability to facilitate and lead groups to accomplish a task such as setting learning outcomes or developing assessment plans or interpreting assessment results to make decisions for improvement. Should have a good understanding of higher education staffing, organization and function.
Condition: Must be mobile to travel to faculty, staff, and administrators’ offices and meeting rooms across campus.
Additional Requirements: Must have the ability to interact professionally and effectively with individuals at all levels of the university (faculty, staff, and administrators). Must have good oral and written communication skills and be comfortable communicating with and presenting material to senior level officials and large groups of people.
