Institution: The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inc. produces two newspapers and three Web sites, as well as newsletters and events. The Chronicle of Higher Education , published since 1966, is the leading source of news, information, and jobs for college and university faculty members and administrators. It has a print readership of 350,000 and Web traffic of more than 14 million pages a month.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy is the newspaper of the non-profit world with a print readership of over 100,000 and Web traffic of more than 1.2 million pages a month.

Job Duties: The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy seek a Director of Editorial Research to expand our role as experts in higher education and philanthropy. The director will be responsible for developing and managing compelling and useful data for our newspapers and Web sites as well as new products. In collaboration with the newsrooms and business department the director will determine what surveys and data will be collected, in what format, in what form information will be published, and how it will be marketed. The director will be responsible for the accuracy and reliability of the data we produce, but his or her chief duty is to build a sound and financially successful operation.

In this newly created position, the director will be expected to show an entrepreneurial bent and have the opportunity to create new information products to serve influential people in higher education, charities, foundations, as well as policy makers and the print and broadcast media.

Key Responsibilities
• Work with other Chronicle leaders to identify the best opportunities to tie the development and publication of data to our strategic goals as an organization.
• Identify editorial opportunities for data collection in higher education and philanthropy and determine priorities.
• Establish a process, timeline, and budget for acquiring and managing new data.
• Identify the technical platform for the collection, storage, and publication of our data to organize and streamline our resources, and to provide the most compelling product to readers.
• Oversee the current stable of signature surveys conducted by The Chronicles, including the Philanthropy 400 , Great Colleges to Work For, and surveys of executive compensation at both higher education and nonprofit institutions.
• Create new signature surveys.
• Manage staff members and make recommendations on staff resources needed to accomplish department objectives, including number and type of positions.
• Determine systematic research methods to be used to ensure reliability and accuracy of data.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with large sets of data, and with most commonly-used software for collecting and analyzing data, including Excel, Filemaker, Crystal Reports, SAS, and SPSS. Additionally, an understanding of the way relational databases operate and an appreciation for how data is marketed is extremely important.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree, preferably in statistics or a related field is required. The incumbent must have at least 5-10 years experience managing research and data projects or assisting in the gathering of data. Experience developing and integrating databases in a journalistic organization is preferred, as is experience supervising employees. Knowledge of higher education or philanthropy is a plus.
