Carleton College is a highly selective, residential, non-sectarian undergraduate liberal arts college enrolling 1,975 students in 34 fields of study and 7 interdisciplinary programs. Job Duties: This is a full-time (1.0) FTE, exempt, regular, full-year, benefit-eligible staff position. The successful candidate may be hired at the Assistant or Associate level, depending upon the individual’s skills, education, and experience.

The Carleton College Assessment Environment:
The Carleton Institutional Research and Assessment (IRA) office has existed since 1971 and was recently renamed to reflect a growing role in assessment activities. Carleton is nationally recognized in the assessment of writing and quantitative reasoning skills, as well as other aspects of student learning and teaching pedagogies. The College is currently developing a new Assessment Plan to meet the needs of a newly-revised curriculum and a growing emphasis on evidence-based assessment of learning at the program and department level. The College participates in a growing number of consortial, cooperative, and grant-based assessment projects.

Purpose of this Position:
The Associate or Assistant Director of Institutional Research and Assessment is part of an established office with an authorized staff of 3.0 FTE including the Director, this position, and a professional Assistant/Associate Director for Institutional Research and Assessment.

The primary focus of this position will be to support, to facilitate, or to help to coordinate a variety of research activities in the assessment of student learning, student life, and learning outcomes at the College. The secondary focus will be work with the IRA office team and others on institutional research projects and analyses as assigned. The holder of the position will report to the Director of Institutional Research and Assessment.

Responsibilities:
• Works closely with the IRA office, deans, administrative offices, academic departments and programs, academic centers, and individual faculty and staff to design and provide administrative support and statistical analyses for formative and summative assessment and evaluation.
• Provides primary administrative and analytical support for the Writing Portfolio requirement.
• Works with multiple constituencies to coordinate, support, or facilitate multiple methods of assessment and evaluation activities, including surveys, focus groups, testing, curricular analysis, program reviews, grant support, and accreditation efforts.
• Provides primary oversight (administration, analysis, and reporting) for Carleton’s ongoing suite of institutional and ad hoc surveys.
• Prepares regular reports and specialized analyses of data from Carleton’s administrative databases.
• Prepares and presents summary analyses of assessment findings.
• Represents the IRA office on certain committees.
• Shares a variety of the routine responsibilities assigned to the Institutional Research and Assessment office, including developing and maintaining key outcomes measures, updating key files and the IRA Web pages, and working with mandated or consortial reporting requirements.
• Other duties as assigned.

There is considerable latitude for initiative and creative work in these responsibilities.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications Required:
• The successful candidate should have considerable experience or coursework in the area of educational assessment, with experience specifically in higher education assessment at the undergraduate level.
• Masters degree or higher in educational research, social sciences, or a related field.
• Significant coursework and/or practical experience in research design and methodology, especially with applied quantitative and qualitative research.
• Very strong existing skills with Excel and SPSS are essential; strong knowledge of other desktop applications including word processing and presentation software.
• Demonstrated experience in survey design, administration, and analysis.
• Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills.
• Ability to work both independently and to function as a respected team member with faculty, administrative, and staff colleagues.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and deal patiently with changing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with Microsoft Access, Datatel Colleague, Recruitment Plus, Advance, Cognos, and/or reporting from complex administrative databases.
• Experience with qualitative analysis techniques, such as text analysis, and running focus groups or conducting interviews.
