For over 40 years, Portland State’s Office of Institutional Research and Planning (OIRP) has provided high quality analysis and reporting to decision makers, faculty, students, and external constituencies. OIRP reports to the university president. It is highly regarded for its responsiveness, accuracy, and attention to customer needs, as well as its leadership in the adoption of innovative approaches to institutional research. It comprises a director, associate director, senior research analyst, two research analysts, enrollment management analyst, executive support specialist, course evaluation coordinator, and two or more graduate assistants or student workers. Professional staff members regularly serve on committees and task forces on a variety of topics and actively participate in professional associations, such as the Pacific Northwest Association for Institutional Research and the Association for Institutional Research.

Job dutiesPosition Summary:

The Office of Institutional Research and Planning at Portland State University is seeking an experienced professional to provide institutional research support for planning and decision making. Reporting to the director, the position is responsible for extracting, analyzing, and reporting data from both institutional and external data bases; modeling, analysis, and interpretation of information in support of institutional planning and management; employing data mining or analytics in support of institutional decision making; serving on and supporting task forces and committees on a variety of topics; overseeing student workers or graduate assistants; and working collaboratively on projects with colleagues within and outside the institutional research office.

Responsibilities include:

1. Extracting, analyzing, and reporting data from the university’s business intelligence system, or from external data sources at the state or national levels, in response to standard and ad hoc requests.
2. Employing data mining, analytics, and modeling techniques to provide timely information in support of institutional planning and enrollment management.
3. Using Tableau, managing the department's website and serving as liaison with the university webmaster and information technology staff regarding website issues.
4. Serving on and providing support to task forces and committees, as assigned.
5. Overseeing student workers or graduate assistants.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree with experience working in a higher education environment or related field.
• Ability to write, speak, and present information clearly and concisely to a wide variety of audiences.
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel.
• Demonstrated technical expertise developing queries and reports from relational databases and business intelligence systems.
• Ability to complete assignments on time and with a high degree of quality and responsiveness and to take projects from start to finish with minimal supervision.
• Ability to successfully complete a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree and at least 5 years demonstrated and increasingly responsible work experience in institutional research, institutional effectiveness, or enrollment management.
• Demonstrated knowledge of institutional research theory, principles, and methods.
• Experience with IBM Cognos, Banner, and Tableau.
• Experience analyzing data sets using SPSS, SAS, R, or an equivalent.
Salary range$40,000 - $60,000
Salary benefitsCompensation:
