Emerging Research on Queer & Trans-Spectrum Students Across Higher Education

Speech BubblesOn October 26, 2017, the Tyler Clementi Center of Rutgers University will host a daylong Academic Colloquium to highlight critical research on queer-spectrum and trans-spectrum student experiences in higher education.

The program will feature a presentation of findings from the largest and first-ever meta-analysis of queer-spectrum and trans-spectrum student experiences in the history of American higher education, comparing national datasets from the Center for Postsecondary Research at Indiana University, the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA, the SERU-AAU Consortium led by UC-Berkeley and U-MN, the American College Health Association, and Rankin & Associates.

Collectively, these findings represent the responses of 78,798 queer-spectrum students and 8,361 trans-spectrum students at 1,291 institutions. MORE

No, Really, What do YOU Think?

The world has been making quite a display of itself in recent weeks, with the solar eclipse, and then the devastating hurricanes and wild fires that are impacting lives across our country.

While the Board had the joy of being in Tallahassee and sharing eclipse viewing (though not in totality) with the AIR staff, that joy has been replaced by our concern for all who are in the paths of destruction.

As I prepared a list of students who were from areas impacted by Harvey, I noted that the facility with which we in IR can do that work is one of the ways in which IR provides added value to our institutions. Defining that value was a key part of the discussions we had as a Board during our August meeting.

As staff in the Executive Office continue to do outreach to communicate our value, the Board continues to think about the future, and the ways in which IR will provide value beyond today. We have established a standing IR Future Committee which will be comprised of four to five Board members, and will report to the Board at each meeting. Current topics are:
IR and IT relationships
IR training provided by other associations
The increasing call for student unit record data and the impact of ubiquity of unit record data on IR
Vendors and consultants, and IR’s role
Changing role of IR as data collection and analytics are being done across campus

Data Bite
Every U.S. postsecondary institution that awards federal financial aid must submit data to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) as part of the Integrated Postsecondary Data System (IPEDS). eAIR: Your institution, Washington & Jefferson College (W&J), will have a 10-year accreditation visit in 2018-2019 from the Middle States Commission. At a high level, as a Co-Accreditation Liaison Officer, how will you prepare your college for that visit?

Generally, an institution begins planning two to three years before re-accreditation by the Commission is scheduled to occur. In 2016, the President of W&J officially appointed a senior faculty member and me as co-chairs to coordinate every aspect of the self-study process at W&J, as reflected in the duties to the right. Chi-Square Test in Excel Using VBA

In this month’s Tech Tip, we’ll look at using VBA code for running a chi-square test in Excel. (Note: this tip does require some basic knowledge of VBA programming in Excel.)

The Data Analysis add-in to Excel offers a number of basic statistical analyses (e.g. regression, t-test, ANOVA, etc.), but curiously, a chi-square test is not among them. MORE
