Assistant/Associate Director of Assessment

Job Duties

Virginia Military Institute is accepting applications for an Assistant/Associate Director of Assessment. The Assistant/Associate Director of Assessment reports to the Director for Institute Assessment and Evaluation, a position that reports to the Superintendent of the Institute, and is a member of the Office of Assessment and Institutional Research.

1. The Assistant/Associate Director of Assessment serves as a primary technical resource

• for the Institute’s program of student outcomes assessment, to include
- assisting faculty members with the development or refinement of assessment plans and strategies, to include supporting academic program assessment, general education assessment, and academic program review processes
- using quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze student responses to assessment instruments in relation to the learning outcomes employed in various educational contexts at the Institute;
- preparing written reports and giving oral presentations for VMI offices or committees and for external agencies on the nature and on the findings from assessment activities

• for the Institute’s program of survey research, to include
- developing questionnaires and designing focus groups;
- administering questionnaires on the Web and conducting focus groups;
- using quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze survey responses
- preparation of written research reports
- preparing written reports and giving oral presentations for VMI offices or committees and for external agencies on the nature and on the findings from assessment activities

2. The Assistant/Associate Director of Assessment will also

• Help facilitate the Institute’s online course evaluation system
• Assist the Director in the analysis and reporting of other institutional data, as needed for planning, evaluation and assessment;
• Lead periodic assessment-related workshops for faculty and staff
• Participate in ongoing professional development activities to acquire and maintain knowledge and skills that are essential for performing the duties of the position and for supporting the Office in following best practices in assessment and institutional research;
• Employ appropriate technologies for performing the duties of the position at the necessary level of proficiency, including the Institute’s Datatel/Colleague system of institutional data, statistical software such as SPSS, applications in Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the Institute’s email system (MS Exchange), and Adobe Acrobat. (It is permissible for sufficient proficiency in these skills to develop during the first year of employment.);
• Manage VMI’s assessment/accreditation management system;
• Perform duties of director in the Director’s absence (e.g., sign time sheets, attend committee meetings);
• Assist the Director with accreditation/compliance-related activities.
• Perform related duties as needed.

Job Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent training and experience. Knowledgeable in current and best practices in student outcomes assessment and survey research; experience with advanced analysis of qualitative and quantitative data; and highly proficient in technical writing and oral presentation. Other essential technical skills include proficiency with statistical software (such as SPSS or SAS) and Microsoft Office. Must be able to collaborate effectively with Institute personnel, meet project quality standards and deadlines, and adapt easily to changing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

A master’s degree or PhD in a relevant discipline; previous employment in higher education conducting educational, organizational, or institutional research; demonstrated interest in broadening and deepening expertise in assessment, evaluation, and institutional research; and advanced proficiency Microsoft Excel and with statistical software.

This is a full time administrative/professional position with an excellent benefits package.

Salary based on qualifications and experience.

This is a uniformed position. Previous military experience is not required.
