Job Duties

The Director of Strategic Analytics reports to the Associate Provost of Data Governance & Institutional Research. This position leads the  Strategic Analytics team in using large and disparate datasets to drive business solutions. The Director of Strategic Analytics will also use a variety of data mining/analysis methods to design, build, and implement predictive models; use/create algorithms; and create/run simulations. Moreover, this position has the ability to drive business results with data-based insights and must be comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders and functional teams. The right candidate will have a passion for discovering solutions hidden in large data sets as well as for training and mentoring the team.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                           

  • Lead a team of strategic data analysts in supporting the office’s mission, as it relates to strategic analytics
  • Work with stakeholders throughout the University to identify opportunities for leveraging company data to drive business solutions.
  • Mine and analyze data from University databases to drive optimization and improvement of business strategies.
  • Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques.
  • Develop custom data models and algorithms to apply to datasets.
  • Use predictive modeling to increase and optimize customer experiences, operational efficiencies, and other business outcomes.
  • Coordinate with various functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes.
  • Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy.

Department Specific Functions

  • We are looking for a Director of Strategic Analytics who will support the University with insights gained from analyzing institutional data.
  • We are looking for someone with 3+ years of experience manipulating data sets and building statistical models, has a Master’s or PHD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or another quantitative field, and is familiar with the following software/tools: R, Python, SPSS, SQL Server, Tableau, and others.
  • Knowledge and experience in statistical and data mining techniques: GLM/Regression, Random Forest, Boosting, Trees, text mining, social network analysis, etc.
  • Experience querying databases
  • Experience creating and using advanced machine learning algorithms and statistics: regression, simulation, scenario analysis, modeling, clustering, decision trees, neural networks, etc.
  • Experience visualizing/presenting data for stakeholders using Tableau, R, etc.
  • The ideal candidate will have a drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques, while fostering a learning culture and leading training/mentoring programs.

Job Qualifications

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

Education:

Master’s or PHD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or another quantitative field.

Experience:

5+ years of experience manipulating data sets and building statistical models.

  • Excellent oral and written skills are a must.
  • Ability to be flexible, think critically, and work collaboratively and analytically in a problem-solving environment.
  • Ability to work with and creating data architectures.
  • In depth knowledge and experience using statistical computer languages (R, Python, SQL, etc.) to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets.
  • Knowledge and experience using a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, decision-tree learning, artificial neural networks, etc.) and their real-world advantages/drawbacks to effectively inform business processes.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and concepts (regression, properties of distributions, statistical tests and proper usage, etc.) and experience with applications.
  • Knowledge and experience in statistical and data mining techniques: GLM/Regression, Random Forest, Boosting, text mining, social network analysis, etc.
  • Experience querying databases
  • Experience visualizing/presenting data for stakeholders using Tableau, R, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating across teams.
