Essential Functions: 

  

  • Conducts evaluation and assessment of relevant courses and programming in the undergraduate college and professional schools. 

  • Assists with the design of interventions based on the science of leadership and character development and best practices in empirical measurement and program evaluation.

  • Recruits participants for research studies, collects data, monitors studies, and maintains accurate, organized, and complete records of research.

  • Submits IRB applications and ensures compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and best practices.

  • Prepares manuscripts for publication in relevant academic journals and books.

  • Presents research findings and represents the program at academic conferences and educational convenings.

  • Manages and mentors postdoctoral fellows and student research assistants.

  • Assists with writing, coordinating, and managing major research grants. 

  • Coordinates with program staff, postdoctoral fellows, consultants, and scholars working in related areas to advance strategic planning, program design, and program evaluation.

  • Assists with course development workshops and curriculum design. 

  • Provides consultation to other faculty and staff seeking to develop, implement, and assess leadership and character-related interventions. 

  • Assists with strategic communication and planning, grant administration and program development as needed.

  • May have the opportunity to teach leadership and character-related courses depending on interest and expertise. 

Job Qualifications

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

  • Ph.D. in a relevant social science field, such as psychology, education, program evaluation, sociology, political science, and/or counseling. 

  • Strong analytical and statistical skills with experience using mixed-method (quantitative and qualitative) approaches to empirical research and assessment.

  • Excellent writing, research, and communication skills. 

  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and interpersonal skills, with accuracy and attention to detail. 

  • Experience submitting and managing IRB applications. 

  • Good character, sound judgment, and a strong work ethic. 

  • Commitment to supporting the moral and intellectual development of students. 

  • Experience with, and sensitivity to, diverse populations and the ability to build inclusive and equitable communities where differences are appreciated and engaged. 

  • Demonstrated ability to:

    • Design, manage, and coordinate multiple research studies simultaneously.

    • Develop and advance an ambitious research agenda.

    • Publish rigorous academic research in respected journals and publications. 

    • Initiate projects and work independently with minimal supervision.

    • Collaborate with program staff, postdoctoral fellows, and research assistants to successfully conduct, analyze, and disseminate co-authored research. 

    • Collect, analyze, and manage complex datasets. 

    • Develop short- and long-term research and assessment goals.

    • Set priorities and effectively manage time and resources. 

    • Exercise discretion and keep sensitive information confidential.

    • Positively influence colleagues and develop collaborative relationships with a wide range of people. 

  • Willingness to learn more about leadership and character development and apply that knowledge to inform program design, implementation, and assessment.  

  • Knowledge and understanding of academic cultures, rules, and regulations.

  • Openness to feedback and a commitment to personal and professional growth. 

  • Ability to represent the program and University in a professional manner. 

  • Ability to work occasional weekend or evening hours as needed.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of character education, character interventions, and/or character assessment. 

  • Knowledge of multilevel modeling.

  • Experience as a postdoctoral fellow. 

Institution Description

The Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University seeks a creative and committed scholar with a research program focused on character education, leadership development, moral personality, program evaluation, and/or character interventions to serve as a Senior Research Scholar. The position is funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment to support program development and assessment. We are particularly interested in scholars with knowledge of character and moral education who have strong methodological experience designing, implementing, and assessing interventions. Evidence of strong empirical research and excellent quantitative skills is required, and familiarity with research on character, leadership, or related concepts is preferred. Given the strong emphasis on assessment, knowledge of multilevel modeling is preferred. The successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Director, program staff, and postdoctoral fellows to conduct research related to leadership and character, design and coordinate empirical studies related to interventions in the undergraduate college and professional schools, assist with program design and evaluation, prepare manuscripts for publication, supervise undergraduate and graduate student research assistants, and support faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows who will develop and assess leadership and character in their departments, courses, or programs. This three-year term position is funded initially by a grant from the Lilly Endowment and may be extended depending on additional funding.
