Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), is responsible for the direction, management and implementation of institutional research functions. The Director of Institutional Research will identify data, create procedures, maintain and complete reports of academic activity and performance. This position will ensure the quality of educational programs and maintain compliance with accreditation organizations. Provides internal consultation on the planning, implementation, analysis and reporting of ad hoc institutional research studies and surveys conducted for; the college, academic departments, degree programs, and functional areas. The Director of Institutional Research will oversee well-defined projects and supervise relevant staff and work-study students.  Provides consultation and support to all core Institutional Research activities.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains departmental and institutional databases for reporting and data integrity.
  • Produces timely, accurate, and useful reports for administration, relevant faculty, department heads, and agencies providing funding.
  • Produces timely, accurate and useful data reports for institutional and departmental accreditation reporting and self-studies.
  • Meets with directors of all functional and academic departments to maintain responsive core institutional research functions and to identify emerging needs and concerns.
  • Responds to inquiries and provides direct assistance, as appropriate, to research faculty and students on the William James College campus.
  • Collaborate with grant writers to identify and analyze data in support of grant proposals.
  • Provides ongoing supervision to relevant graduate students, volunteers and research staff.
  • Serves as a member of the WJC Information Communication Technology Advisory Committee (ICTAC). In this role, has shared responsibility for creating data management policies and procedures; defining fields, metrics and calculations; resolving data conflicts; overseeing project-based work.
  • Serves as the Office of Research representative to WJC community-wide groups and ad hoc initiatives.
  • Identifies, researches and provides input in the selection of technology and technological solutions to support, enhance and improve the quality and effectiveness of Institutional Research activities.
  • Work within the guidelines and comply with all ethical, legal and regulatory standards regarding data collection, maintenance, access, dissemination and reporting, as well as retention and final disposition.
  • Conduct literature reviews from scholarly sources and produce written summaries.
  • May require other tasks as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred and 5-7 years job-related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Knowledge of and successful experience in data management and preparation and response to oversight self-study needs is essential. Familiarity with the following  oversight bodies’ requirements and formats is especially relevant:  NECHE (New England Commission of Higher Education), APA CoA (American Psychological Association, Commission on Accreditation), NASP (National Association of School Psychologists), and CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs).
  • Familiarity with technology is essential. Knowledge of the following is highly desirable: ERP Software (e.g., Campus Management’s Campus Nexus for Constituent Relationship Management, CRM, and Student Information System, SIS); SQL; Microsoft Office (especially Excel, Word, PowerPoint); data analysis software (e.g., IBM/SPSS); online survey/form development and implementation using Qualtrics; reference manager software (e.g., Zotero); learning management software, LMS (e.g., Canvas); field education software (e.g., Sonia and Time2Track); basic html skills for website editing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Effective presentation of data in oral, narrative, and tabular forms;
  • Data visualization techniques that provide insight, invite reader engagement and interaction, and support strategic planning and critical managerial decisions;
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills;
  • Ability to work with an increasingly complex and diverse community;
  • Ability to work with large and increasingly complex data sets;
  • Ability to supplement and link external archival data to enhance and supplement internal datasets (e.g., IPEDS data to collect characteristics of other institutions of higher education).

Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills – quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods;
  • Basic understanding of relevant technical skills (e.g., statistical techniques – including multivariate techniques and trend analyses, psychometrics, presentation graphics);
  • Sensitivity to organizational dynamics across institutions, across departments as well as across hierarchical levels;
  • Knowledgeable of the Code of Federal Regulations as they apply to the protection of human subjects from research risks, and the functioning of an effective Institutional Review Board (IRB).
