Job Duties

JOB PURPOSE:

The Institutional Assessment Specialist provides ongoing support for assessment and evaluation activities at the University. The Institutional Assessment Specialist collaborates closely with faculty and department chairs on campus-wide assessment efforts like the Howard Annual Assessment Process and the Annual Assessment Academy. Additionally, the Institutional Assessment Specialist is instrumental in organizing and managing the Annual Assessment Day for faculty staff participants and aid in developing reports for both internal and external stakeholders. Successful candidates demonstrate subject matter expertise in assessment practices, analyzing assessment and outcome data to derive meaningful insights.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Works with assessment professionals at the University managing effective and sustained academic assessment of student learning outcomes at programmatic levels and supports survey activity managed by the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Supports evaluative activity through survey management, and analysis.
  • Co-manages assessment platform for the university (Watermark), offering technical support, troubleshooting, updating users, and creating support material for users.
  • Helps collect and analyze multiple sources of data to improve student learning.
  • Helps disseminate and communicate assessment results to internal and external audiences.
  • Facilitates institutional assessment learning opportunities for faculty and staff.
  • Assists faculty in using assessment software.
  • Works with Assessment team collectively to support faculty and administrative unit leads in the assessment of student learning/success outcomes and program improvement.
  • Serves as member of the Interdisciplinary Evaluation and Assessment Society (IDEAS).
  • Maintains assessment website and co-creates graphical content with assessment team.
  • Participates in trainings and professional development opportunities as needed.
  • Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with colleagues, staff, supervisors, other organizations, and the public.
  • Performs additional assessment-related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:

Works under the general direction of the Director of Institutional Effectiveness and works closely with the Associate Director of Assessment on reporting. Supervision of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to new team members and may assign work to student workers or a graduate assistant.

    Job Qualifications

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of work in higher education required OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree preferred.

    CORE COMPETENCIES:

    • Detail-oriented and collaborative work style.
    • Knowledge of formative and summative assessment methods and practices.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Willingness to learn and teach a variety of assessment-specific technologies.
    • Experience with report building with appropriate visuals (e.g., graphs, tables, etc.).

    PREFERRED COMPETENCIES:

    • Experience with assessment solutions (e.g., Watermark/Task stream, TracDat, Anthology/CampusLabs) and survey management tools (e.g., Qualtrics, Survey Monkey).
    • Experience with web maintenance and content management.
    • Qualitative research experience (e.g., interviews, focus groups, etc.).
    • Fundamental knowledge of statistics (descriptive).
