Business Intelligence Analyst

Job Duties

95% Reporting and Analysis:

  • Develop technically sophisticated reports and dashboards within the ODS/EDW and COGNOS reporting environment
  • Serve as the subject matter expert in COGNOS reporting by providing consultation on the design of complex reports, developing training materials, and facilitating open workshops
  • Develop and maintain documentation regarding reports and dashboards
  • Respond to a variety of ad hoc data requests to meet the specific information needs of the college
  • Conduct descriptive and inferential statistical analyses to provide insight on the effectiveness of programs and operations
  • Analyze, evaluate, logically interpret, and summarize a wide variety of institutional data
  • Verify accuracy and reliability of data and recommend corrections or adjustments where necessary
  • Work with data users to identify needs, clarify specifications, and develop solutions  
  • Provide training and technical support to PPCC staff in using reports and dashboards in the COGNOS environment
  • Collaborate with other departments to continually enhance the quality of institutional data

 

 

5% Other duties:

  • Attend conferences and meetings as assigned by the Executive Director of IE
  • Actively participate in the state-wide Institutional Research Advisory Group and COGNOS Report User Group
  • Collaborate with the Colorado Community College System Business Intelligence Team in the development of system-wide reports and dashboards
  • Assist as needed with other IE-related projects
  • Serve on task forces and project teams
  • Perform necessary administrative duties to ensure smooth operations of the IE Office

Job Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in mathematics, statistics, computer science, education administration, computer information systems, data analytics or closely related fields
  • At least two years of experience developing reports and dashboards using any reporting platform such as MS SQL Server Reporting Services, COGNOS, Qlik View or MicroStrategy
  • At least one year of experience developing reports and dashboards in the postsecondary education environment
  • Experience in SQL query language and programming
  • Experience in quantitative analysis using descriptive and inferential statistics (using SPSS or other statistical programs)

 

    

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in mathematics, statistics, computer science, education administration, computer information systems, data analytics or closely related fields
  • At least two years of experience developing reports and dashboards at a two-year or four-year institution or a statewide postsecondary educational system
  • Experience working with COGNOS reporting environment
  • COGNOS certification
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the mission and role of the community college and its focus on student success and meeting community needs
  • Experience working with Banner products
  • Proficiency in SPSS
  • Familiarity with visual design concepts for dashboards
  • Experience working with MS Access

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in working with large data sets
  • Strong understanding of database and data warehouse structures
  • Experience extracting data from large relational databases
  • Strong SQL skills including the ability to create and modify complex SQL scripts
  • Advanced report/dashboard writing skills including creating joints, prompts, and calculated fields
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving, and interpretive skills to analyze situations, define problems, and develop/implement solutions 
  • Ability to analyze and logically interpret data
  • Demonstrated experience organizing complex data sets into tabular and graphic presentations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office with the ability to work in Excel at a sophisticated level (e.g. pivot tables, slicers, formulas, macros)
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present complex information in various formats to a diverse audience
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish goals, priorities, and timelines
  • Ability to complete projects independently and work cooperatively as part of the team
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of information
  • Extreme attention to detail and data accuracy
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and tasks concurrently
  • Ability to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated understanding of the concepts of diversity and multiculturalism and their application in the workplace
