Job Duties

The Office of Research & Engagement (ORE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) seeks applications for a Data Analyst for its Research Informatics (RI) unit. This unit is responsible for providing data relative to the research enterprise including mining information from award, proposal, expenditure, and publication databases; generating research activity reports; tracking various research output and impact data; analyzing changes in external funding support; and identifying trends in the university’s research performance. The Data Analyst directly engages in the generation, maintenance, analysis, presentation and dissemination of information that supports decision making, enhances research intelligence and facilitates communication to internal and external constituencies. The Data Analyst must be able to independently assess and respond to issues of data integrity and must have the necessary technical expertise to translate data into actionable information.

Duties/Responsibilities:
• Data querying and data aggregation from internal sources
• Data collection from external sources
• Standard and ad hoc report generation
• Designing and generating automated reports and electronic dashboards to inform data driven decisions using software such as Microsoft Excel, Power BI, Tableau Desktop, RStudio and other applications
• Data analysis and visualization to identify potential trends for use in decision-making
• Developing and maintaining procedures to improve accuracy and efficiency of data querying, report/dashboard generation, and data presentation processes

Job Qualifications

Minimum Required Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in data science, mathematics, statistics, computer science, computational social science or a related field
• Two years of related experience in working with large datasets from multiple sources to generate reports and create data visualizations

Preferred Education and Experience: 
• Master’s degree in data science, mathematics, statistics, computer science, computational social science or a related field
• Knowledge of SQL
• Experience using the following applications: SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Reporting Services, Power BI, Tableau Desktop or RStudio
• Experience with information presentation and document creation software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat and InDesign
• Experience in higher education setting or national laboratory
• Knowledge of Grants and Contracts processing in academic environment or national laboratory

Minimum Required Skills and Abilities:
• Excellent Microsoft Excel skills
• Analytical skills necessary to collect information from diverse sources, perform analyses, summarize, and present the information to communicate data, trends, and solve problems
• Good interpersonal, organizational skills, and computer skills
• An aptitude for learning new skills and software applications
