Job Duties

The purpose of this position is to assist in the research of therapies for pancreatic cancer in the Division of Translational Research in the Department of Surgery. This position will assist in drug testing and assessment of cell viability from various species using sterile technique, cell culture, and knowledge of pancreatic disease. The researchers in the department will represent a critical resource for the assessment of assays and results as required to support the advancement of pancreatic cancer pre-clinical and research studies.

Specific duties include:

Independently conduct experiments in an assigned area (80%)

  • Perform screening of virus library.
  • Assist with performing orthotopic pancreatic cancer survival surgeries and tumor transplants on animals
  • Perform molecular biology analyses
  • Assist in evaluating the effect of therapeutics on cells, tissue samples, and in animal models
  • Perform assays to assess the viability of cancer cells with different molecules and supporting activities.
  • Maintenance and treatment of cells in culture
  • Assist with the development and troubleshooting for new techniques and assays for the assessment of pancreatic cancer therapies and cell viability

Laboratory Management (10%)

  • Maintain laboratory safety, ensuring the lab is compliant with appropriate safety regulations, and lab specific protocols are established and followed. Ensure lab members are trained in the specific competencies and comply with lab safety regulations.
  • Order and maintain lab supplies including reagents, supplies and equipment
  • Perform validation exercises for all aspects of reagent and supply preparation and processing
  • Ensure compliance with record keeping and safety training
  • Other maintenance and supply duties as required 

Data Analysis (5%)

  • Analyze, summarize and report pancreatic cancer data to supervisor as well as other members of the pancreatic cancer research teams.
  • Other data management duties as required

Literature review, R&D, and additional duties (5%)

  • Review relevant research literature to facilitate job performance
  • Assist with ongoing R&D operations as time allows and as assigned by supervisors
  • Other duties as required

Job Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required qualifications: 

  •  BA/BS in a biologically related field and two years of experience working in a biological lab, or a combination of education and work experience in a biological lab to equal 6 years.
  • Demonstrated experience in molecular biology, cell biology or related field. 
  • Ability to conduct experiments independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to stand at a laboratory bench or hood for extended periods of time and lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as needed by project.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Graduate-level coursework
  •  Previous experience working in a laboratory setting with various procedures performed following proper biological safety requirements for BSL2
  •  Experience using the following equipment is preferred: fluorometer, spectrophotometer, spectrometer, centrifuge, speed-vac, microscopes, biological safety cabinet, autoclave, incubators, pipetman, electronic pipet, digital balance, centrifuges, lab chillers and water baths, fume hoods, gas cylinders, pH meter, sonicator, flow cytometer, 7300 Real-Time PCR System, etc.
