Job Duties

Southeastern University is looking for a Data Solutions Engineer responsible for building data solutions to enhance the work of the Office of Research and Strategic Projects and support the data driven culture of SEU. The Data Solutions Engineer is responsible for designing, building, integrating, and maintaining data from multiple sources. They will assist in discovering new data sources, collecting and transforming it into usable data sets. The Data Solutions Engineer will assist in facilitating data usage at all levels of the institution.

Responsibilities

  • Data Acquisition
    • Manages the acquisition of data from an expanding variety of sources.
    • Works with the RSP team and constituents to identify data needs.
    • Regularly performs data discovery. Identifying and recommending additional sources of internal and external data supporting current and future projects.
    • Manages data pipelines using external service APIs or SQL queries.
  • Data Management
    • Evaluates incoming data sets, selects appropriate data structure and storage, uses algorithms to transform data into usable data sets.
    • Manages both structured and unstructured data.
    • Manages current and future data sets in the Office of Research and Strategic Projects. This includes flat tables, data marts, star schema databases and data lakes.
  • Data Utilization
    • Manages data pipelines/delivery between data storage and end users.
    • Explores data sets for new understanding, subsets, data set connections, etc.
    • Maintain and create Data-on-Demand data marts.
    • Train end users in basic data extraction, basic data manipulation, analytics and interpretation.
  • Innovation
    • Support and recommend long-term RSP projects such as major to career pathways, student success, enrollment trends, academic programs, financial, student financial aid, program demand, retention and graduation, KPIs and others.
    • Recommend “out of the box” analysis and projects based on collected data, institutional goals, current and future opportunities and threats.
  • General Responsibilities
    • Work with Deans, Department Chairs, Directors and other stakeholders in asking questions, prioritizing needs, identifying and analyzing data, interpreting results and adapting appropriate performance metrics/KPI.
    • Support initiatives identifying data integrity issues, negotiating solutions and training end users to increase data accuracy.
    • Provide support, guidance and collaboration with team members to identify new data sources, data collection, and facilitate data usage.
    • Evaluate current software components and make recommendations.
  •  Specialization
    • Data science is a broad field. Often individuals have an interest or expertise in related fields not directly applicable to their primary position. In addition to the primary responsibilities outlined above, this position will have the opportunity to utilize skills/interest in any of the following fields: Data Visualization, Big, Data, Economic and Geospatial Intelligence, Business and Financial Intelligence or Qualitative Intelligence.


Job Qualifications

  • A Masters degree in Data Engineering, Computer Science, Programing, Business Intelligence, or other discipline combining programming and analytics.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in data engineering, data development, database management or related position. Experience in Higher Education preferred.
  • Strong analytical Able to make logical sense of complex issues.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Works closely with and communicates effectively with users and stakeholders.
  • Highly organized. Able to prioritize projects and requests.
  • Works well in a team environment, yet able to work effectively on their own for extended periods.
  • Follows Agile development methodology for timely and precise delivery of products for end users.
  • Software and Analytic tools
    • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Access and Excel
    • Intermediate knowledge of SQL programing Language
    • Intermediate knowledge of another programming language Python, Java, Scalia and distributive systems such as Hadoop.
    • Intermediate knowledge of SQL Server Management Studio
    • Working knowledge of SPSS, Python, R or other statistical software.
    • Knowledge of or experience with Salesforce and Einstein
    • Knowledge of ERP systems. Jenzabar preferred.
    • 
Broad understanding of Database fundamentals and Information Systems.
