Job Duties

The Senior Institutional Research Analyst within the Office of Institutional Research (OIR) develops and designs reporting and analytics for a wide variety of internal and external constituents, fostering a culture of data-driven decision making and supporting regional accreditation compliance. The Senior IR Analyst manages and maintains time-sensitive publications for widespread audiences using dashboards or web interfaces for quick, timely information delivery. The Senior IR Analyst also publishes the annual IR Planning and Reference Fact Book and oversees and maintains the OIR web site.

Develops and designs customized reports and dashboards, utilizing complex programming analyses, for a variety of constituents, including the President, Provost and Office of the Provost, Executive Vice President for Business Affairs, Vice President for University Marketing and Enrollment Planning, and other Senior Team members, to support strategic data-driven decision-making, including time-sensitive publications for widespread audiences and benchmarking for strategic planning. Creates dashboards that will complement a wide range of requests using data in different formats and from various platforms including Cognos, Tableau, and SAS. Evaluates availability, accuracy and validity of institutional data sources and reporting tools to be utilized. Analyzes and transforms raw data into targeted dashboards used to support evidence-based decisions by varying levels of leadership within the College.

Develops and designs complex systems for the extraction, compilation, analysis, and processing of institutional data aimed towards fulfilling regional and program accreditation reporting requirements. Accreditation reports include but are not limited to providing audit and accreditation versions of faculty credentials rosters several times per semester for Academic Affairs’ accreditation compliance. Monitors updates to program and regional accreditation standards to ensure that data collection is appropriate.

Manages the data gathering, formatting and publication of the IR Planning and Reference Fact Book for the annual online and static publication. Ensures accuracy and completeness of data. The gathering of data requires establishing and monitoring systems for extraction and automation of importing official IPEDS and SC CHE data into the Fact Books. Formatting and publication entails ensuring accuracy of data as well as error-free publishing. The Fact Book represents the College as the online data source to the campus community and the public and for the executive College administration as well as the Board of Trustees.

Directed by the Assistant Director of IR, authors Cognos reports according to end-user specifications. Confirms that reports conform to official reporting methodologies. Works with Assistant Director of IR to incorporate additional Cognos analytical and dashboard capabilities into the College reporting strategy.

Supports institutional assessment and strategic planning efforts by collaborating with division and department heads to provide data and analysis related to the College’s and units’ assessment initiatives and goals. Works closely and cooperatively with the assessment functions of the institution to provide evidence and analysis using institutional and comparative data and analytics.

Extracts data and develops reports for ad hoc institutional requests and external survey requests. Provides information support for updates to the OIR web site and periodic reports and publications. Collects, analyzes and presents comparative institutional data to support the College’s strategic data needs.

Job Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, computer science, mathematics/statistics, engineering, management information science, data processing or related field and a minimum of two years’ experience with Cognos, SQL, and/or SAS within a higher education setting is required. Working knowledge of methods and techniques of data extraction, analysis, and reporting is preferred. A master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience. Experience working in a higher education environment is preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge: Understanding of methods and techniques of data extraction, analysis and reporting. Knowledge of national data sources IPEDS, US News, and CSRDE and the ability to extract, compile and report data from these sources. Must be able to work well under strict deadlines and have exceptional attention to detail. Must understand the significance of maintaining data integrity and confidentially with student records; knowledge of and compliance with FERPA regulations required. Preferred: Knowledge of specific computer software packages, programming languages and operating systems, including Ellucian Banner databases, SQL, Cognos, SAS, and HTML. Experience working with dashboard tools such as Tableau.
