Senior Communications Director

Job Duties

Social Media & Engagement

  • Direct NRMP social media presence
    • Create content that highlights NRMP activities, initiatives & promotes broader medical education topics
    • Work with vendors to develop graphics, multimedia, FAQs & other materials for online posts
    • Develop strategies & identify opportunities to build & expand community engagement; showcase NRMP activities & initiatives, comment on & leverage important topics within the GME community & increase exchanges with GME community members to advance the organization’s visibility & reputation as a thought leader
  • Respond to customer support inquiries; oversee online conversations with users & review NRMP responses to postings, questions & comments to ensure responses are correct, concise & portray NRMP positively
  • Use analytics to monitor social media & email usage, growth & engagement; prepare reports for Board of Directors
  • Build partnerships with industry organizations to promote Match Week & other NRMP milestones & initiatives
  • Collaborate with internal content experts to maintain consistent messaging across platforms


        • Oversee content development & maintenance to ensure alignment with strategic goals & needs of constituents
        • Collaborate with internal experts to develop web content; support executive leadership in strategic analysis of site design, flow & function
        • Collaborate with IT vendor on updates to content management system (installation of plug-ins; analytics tracking)
        • Develop infographics & visual learning aids to promote messaging on research, Match results & other projects
        • Develop online resources for constituents to increase awareness & understanding of the Match process; work with NRMP staff to design & build new resources promoting research, policy or Board action items
        • Maintain comprehensive site map to ensure content is updated promptly & accurately
        • Manage content editorial needs

                    Public Relations

                    • Leverage e-newsletter to highlight Matching Program activities & trends in the GME community to increase engagement, promote understanding & support of NRMP mission, purpose & strategic focus
                    • Draft press releases & other materials (Annual Report) that effectively promote activities & accomplishments of NRMP
                    • Track media inquiries & requests for interviews; consult with President/CEO or other leadership on appropriate responses & direct inquiries to appropriate NRMP spokespersons
                    • Track news about graduate medical education through news media & information from other medical education associations, specialty groups & trade publications; report findings to senior management team
                    • Support crisis communications campaigns, contacting constituents & the press regarding the current status of NRMP activities
                    • Conduct surveys to identify constituent engagement with communication practices & inform new offerings
                    • Manage press, e-newsletter, media & report editorial needs


                                • Review message themes
                                  • Prepare email content for Main Residency Match & Fellowship Matches
                                  • Ensure accuracy & consistency of formatting; make recommendations
                                • Maintain internal tracking system for disseminating information (website, social media email) to ensure timely, seamless messaging

                                  Job Qualifications

                                  A successful candidate will have the expertise and skills described below.

                                  EDUCATION, PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE &TRAINING

                                  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in communications, marketing, public relations, or related area; Master’s degree preferred
                                  • 5 - 7 years of professional experience in a communications position, preferably in a higher education, medical education, or healthcare association setting

                                  TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

                                  • Excellent oral, written, & interpersonal communication; consistently able to identify and effectively message in “voice” that is appropriate for the project/audience
                                  • Knowledge & experience with WordPress content management system, Cision/PR Newswire, Constant Contact, & Adobe Creative Suite software preferred
                                  • Proven track record of managing social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, & Twitter
                                  • Experience analyzing & translating information for colleagues, executive leadership & the press
                                  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex business rules, policies, & data into easily understood language for Matching Program participants & other third parties
                                  • Knowledge or strong in learning about graduate medical education & the Match process
                                  • Strong proofreading, editing & PowerPoint skills
                                  • Superior organizational skills & the ability to manage multiple priorities, often with inflexible deadlines
                                  • Ability to build relationships & collaborate with external consultants, technical staff & the media
                                  • Ability to function well under pressure & maintain professional demeanor during peak periods in the Match process
                                  • Ability to work well independently & as a team member

                                  • Infrequent contact with teaching hospital institutional officials, residency program directors & medical school student affairs deans


                                  • Frequent interaction with NRMP staff addressing & developing marketing, communications & public relations materials

                                  This position is primarily sedentary in the Washington DC office OR REMOTE with occasional overnight travel and may require some bending and lifting.
