  • A cover letter that includes the candidate’s teaching and research experience. The letter should also address an ability to meet the qualifications articulated in the position description, including a portfolio website link providing 20 samples of the candidate’s own professional work, and a portfolio website link providing 20 samples of work by the candidate’s student work;
  • A curriculum vitae comprised of at least those elements specified on the application form and including the names, titles, addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers of at least five individuals who can speak to the candidate’s potential for success in this position;

Finalists for the position will:

  • be required to provide an official transcript;
  • be required to provide three letters of reference dated within the last two years;
  • Final candidates being interviewed are expected to make a presentation of creative work and a teaching demonstration to faculty and interact with students.

Job Duties

The Department of Art, fully accredited by NASAD, offers a B.F.A. in Visual Communication Design and B.A. in Art History. The Department has 10 full-time faculty members; departmental majors’ number approximately 600. The Visual Communication Design program encompasses the largest percentage of undergraduate majors within the College of Environmental Design. Echoing the university philosophy of cultivating success through a diverse culture of experiential learning, discovery, and innovation, students have access to a wide variety of discipline specific experiences. Through faculty-led efforts, our students have had opportunities for collaborations with other local and international universities, special projects and internships with our community partners and prior study abroad programs.

 

This tenure-track position includes, but is not limited to, instruction in Visual Communication Design and related fields—with a range of topics such as life drawing, 2D foundations, illustration, photography—for undergraduate courses within the Department of Art. This position requires teaching, advising, as well as professional and creative activities in Visual Communication Design or studio arts or related area. Applicants who demonstrate a commitment to inclusive excellence and diversity in higher education are especially encouraged to apply. The candidate must be a dynamic educator who is forward thinking and adaptable to a changing marketplace.  The candidate should demonstrate strong technical skills, hand skills, and craft. A full-time faculty member should be fully invested in all aspects of program development and assessment and will fulfill academic advisor duties as well as participate in department, college, and university level services, and provide academic and professional advice to students. The candidate should be committed to maintaining an inclusive campus community that values the diversity of the student body. 

Job Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

  • F.A. in Visual Communication Design, Graphic Design, or a related field. Terminal degree must be earned by the start of the appointment.
  • A commitment and record of contributions to student success and diversity through applicant’s teaching, scholarship, or service, demonstrated by a Student Success Statement addressing at least two of the inclusive excellence criteria listed above. (Limit to 2 pages)
  • A minimum of two (2) years of professional work experience in Graphic Design or Visual Communication Design or related field.
  • Teaching experience in Graphic Design or Visual Communication Design or related field at the university level.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications: 

  • Effective teaching in a variety of studio arts and Visual Communication Design courses in life drawing, painting, 2D design, and illustration, including the concepts, principles, and practices involved in new directions for Visual Communication Design.
  • Hand-rendering skills and ability to teach digital tools and software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Expert use and instruction of applicable software and technologies.
  • Effective mentoring and advising of students.
  • Record of active participation in professional organizations.
