Assistant Data Analyst - Enrollment Management

Job Duties

  • Day to day report management

    • Gather and document requirements from requests for reports and analysis

    • Manage cyclical updates of existing reports

    • Manage report scheduling & distribution of reports to users around campus

  • Report Creation

    • Work closely with operational units inside of Enrollment Management and constituents outside of EM to understand their business process to understand use of their data & anticipate needs.

    • Build queries using the various data sources that contain data from enterprise systems or supplemental data sources.

    • Author reports, including list-based exports of data as well as summary reports and dashboards in MSU’s report building tools, including visualizations and interactive capabilities

    • Modify existing reports to add additional information or to account for changing business needs represented by new codings in the enterprise systems

    • Work with the Office of Information Technology to create additional data sources or data views to support these endeavors.

  • Assist with the implementation of new technologies

    • Liaise with vendors and departments to understand data integration and system configuration needs.

    • Provide assistance during the implementation phase of any adopted technology

    • Work with each department to determine the best use of data emerging from new systems

  • Data Analysis

    • Collect data from multiple sources internally & externally and review its contents for data types & structures

    • Clean data examining data for consistency, missing values, duplicates, and other issues

    • Obtain and summarize descriptive statistics for data sets and query results.

    • Assist with more advanced analysis to understand historic trends and project future activity; validate the results of analysis

    • Identify and facilitate solutions for data integrity issues

    • Assist the writeup of result summaries from research projects, including executive summaries, detailed results, methodology used, interpretations of results, and suggestions for additional research

  • Research Gathering

    • Gather data and reports from external governmental sources such as the state & federal Department of Education, Census Bureau, and 3rd party sources such as College Board, EAB, and other firms serving the higher education industry

    • Gather information about best practices and novel approaches to data utilization at other higher education institutions.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Management retains the right to add or change duties at any time

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university

  • A minimum of three years of experience in a position with primary responsibilities in data reporting & analysis.

  • A strong desire to learn new technical skills as well as more advanced methods of data reporting and statistical analysis

  • Experience working with SQL to perform complex database queries.

  • A solid understanding of database concepts such as indexes, keys, tables, normalized and denormalized data

  • Data validation and cleansing

  • Basic statistical analysis through summary & descriptive statistics

  • Experience with at least one report authoring tool such as Cognos, Crystal Reports, Tableau, or similar

  • The ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications

  • The ability to work both independently and in a team environment

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Demonstrate the ability for creative problem solving


    • A Bachelor’s degree from a program focusing on either computer science, data analysis, or statistics

    • A Master’s degree program with a focus on either computer science, data analysis, or statistical analysis may reduce the required experience on a year-for-year basis, but no less than a single year of experience.

    • An understanding of the CRISP-DM analysis cycle

    • Experience with a statistical analysis program such as SPSS or JMP

    • Experience in both quantitative and qualitative research

    • Experience in mid- and high-level statistical analysis such multivariate regressions, machine learning

    • Experience with diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive statistical analysis

    • Experience in a higher education environment and/or Institutional Research office

    • Experience with a programming language such as Python or R

    • Proficiency in either Cognos or Tableau

    • Experience with Oracle-specific SQL or PL/SQL
