Job Duties

Develop and implement web-based interactive reporting applications using dashboard tools (e.g., Tableau, Argos) to communicate quantitative and visually-displayed information to internal constituents.

Write clear, concise, complete documentation for applications, business processes, technical procedures, and interactive systems. Creates or modifies applications to solve moderately complex problems considering business intelligence tools’ capacity and limitations. Supports technology applications by exploring and adapting to changing technologies.

Creates help documentation and training for users of analytic tools and processes. Provides support for analytic tools and user experiences. Review possible solutions to problems and select the most appropriate course of action analytic tools with the least amount of disruption for the involved community users. Determine the source of problems. Debug programs written by other programmers and understand the program logic involved.

Develop project/task work plans for all analytical and technical activities that involve institutional research, institutional effectiveness, and planning. Monitor various assigned data tools via reports and user feedback to ensure the uninterrupted and accurate functioning of multiple analytical tools. Develop project plans, manages milestones, and drives project of moderate complexity forward. Accountable for keeping the project on track. Design project plans for analytic tools development/enhancements with resource estimates.

Consult with ITS to resolve technical problems. Provide analytical tools consulting and services for the user community. Provide consultation to department and/or management on assigned projects. Make technical recommendations based on analysis of business needs, and integration of existing platforms/applications. Participate in developing team strategies related to emerging technologies.

Provide system analysis and maintenance to Student Data Mart, tracking problems and/or issues through the system in order to ensure problem resolution, monitor Ellucian Banner users’ errors in the data mart, and assist with solutions. Applications include but are not limited to data marts and Ellucian Banner.


Job Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of directly applicable experience; Master’s degree and 1-2 years experience preferred.

The successful candidate:
  • professional experience with a student information system, preferably Ellucian Banner
  • an understanding of data warehousing and repositories, and information organization, as well as experience with a data mart or data warehouse, preferably the UNC Student Data Mart
  • possesses a working knowledge of project management and project documentation practices
  • has the ability to work with various business applications
  • has the ability to work independently and take initiative to see projects and assignments through to completion
  • can analyze information to make necessary decisions
  • exercises judgment and discretion in problem-solving, and can plan, prioritize, and organize workflow
  • has the ability to work flexible schedules
  • excellent analytical and organizational skills along with written and oral communication skills
  • great interpersonal skills to interact effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of individuals in a high-pressure environment
  • can demonstrate relevant technical knowledge including SQL
  • experience with visual analytics platforms, Argos and Tableau preferred.

Institution Description

The Student Data Mart (SDM) Business Analyst serves as the Campus Administrator for the Student Data Mart System, providing technical support and consulting with UNC System Office analysts and programmers, and leadership from campus functional areas to ensure the integrity and accuracy of data provided for external reporting requirements and to develop and modify application solutions at both enterprise and department levels. This position also serves as the Campus Administrator for the UNC Insight system, collaborating with individuals at all levels on campus and with the UNC System Office and HelioCampus representatives to provide access and develop application solutions within the system to facilitate data visualization development for the campus community. The SDM Team Lead collaborates directly and routinely with representatives from Information Technology Services, the University Registrar’s Office, and other functional areas to surface data quality issues and devise methods for the capture of such issues on an ongoing basis. Within Institutional Research and Analysis, the SDM Business Analyst works with the staff to develop, organize, and maintain the local repository of official census data, including both legacy data and that associated with Student Data Mart.
