2009 CALL FOR IPEDS INSTRUCTORS

OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM

The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) provides face-to-face and online training on the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) with funding from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). We annually produce 20 or more one-day face-to-face workshops, provide over 25 online videos and create downloadable materials on each of the survey components and tools applicable to IPEDS.

To accomplish these tasks, AIR recruits experienced IPEDS users to develop and deliver a curriculum that takes a broad view of IPEDS data in order to assure the quality of IPEDS data and to improve the skills of institutional researchers for using these data. The 2009 curriculum takes a holistic view of IPEDS tasks including, understanding the collection process, leading an IPEDS cycle on campus, involving other stakeholders, assuring that data requirements and definitions are understood, creating various data reports, and recognizing the varied needs of data consumers for institutional improvement. The 2009 curriculum consists of a series of modules based on three themes:

WHAT INSTRUCTORS DO

AIR will schedule one-day workshops to be held in conjunction with higher education conferences and select one to two instructors to deliver instructional modules in a workshop format. Instructors are selected based on availability, geographic location, and expertise. Each instructor will teach one or two three-hour module(s) using materials provided by AIR. All travel expenses, at least one night in a hotel, per diem meals, and an honorarium will be paid to instructors who present these workshops.

Instructors may also be asked to update online training videos for the data collection surveys and tools as well as downloadable reference materials. Working in small teams, instructors will review changes announced by NCES and make appropriate edits to existing training media. The team will annually produce a segment on “What’s New This Year” for each of the training videos. Instructors will earn compensation for this work.

All instructors must attend a training session at the Bolger Center in Potomac, Maryland, June 28 – 30, 2009. Instructors will learn about the latest changes for IPEDS from NCES staff, practice using the 2009 curriculum materials, and develop their skills with the various IPEDS data tools. All travel costs, lodging, and meals will be paid and instructors will earn an honorarium for their participation.
