Change With Analytics
The Change With Analytics Playbook (Playbook) is a comprehensive resource designed to support institutions in creating a culture and capacity for strategic data use. Released in August 2024 by AIR, EDUCAUSE, and the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), this resource contains 16 “plays” for data leaders to follow in order to make significant progress on their institution’s analytics goals.

LEADing Change With Analytics
Moving from insight to action takes more than access to data, analyses, and reports — it requires leadership, facilitation, and strategic communication. This series of workshops brings the Change With Analytics Playbook to life, providing you with tools to use at your institution. Through a blend of theory and practice, you will develop strategies to engage stakeholders, create effective teams, plan activities that identify your goals and move toward them, and foster a culture of data-informed decision making. Each workshop will include several activities that engage you with the implementation of the Playbook. Workshops are independent and each covers a discrete area of the change process or the Playbook. You are welcome to join us for the topics most relevant to you or for the entire series.

Facilitating Change
In this workshop, we will understand how change impacts us at both the personal and organizational levels, how to connect stakeholders, and how to overcome resistance to change. You will leave with practical tools to enhance your success at making change stick.

Building and Developing a Team
In this workshop, we will consider team plays and what it takes to successfully implement them, including building a successful cross-functional analytics team, working with executive sponsors to maximize impact, and considering what typical analytics job responsibilities look like when the rubber meets the road.

Assess the Current State of Analytics
In this workshop, we will examine how to use our assessment skills to level up on understanding our institutions’ analytics needs. In particular, we will cover successfully using and launching an assessment tool, designing and conducting a focus group, and applying the technique of SWOT analysis to analytics.

Create and Manage a Data Strategy Plan
In this workshop, we will apply the lens of design thinking and consider how to build a shared vision and roadmap for analytics, identify what our users really need, and create products that matter.

Develop and Maintain a Data Governance Program
In this workshop, we will engage in activities around identifying institutional data champions and other key roles, creating a shared understanding through a data governance charter, and empowering data stewards to take charge of data governance to improve the quality of institutional data.

Build and Support a Data Literate Community
In this workshop, we will engage in learning and activities around building data literacy in leaders, enhancing urgency to act through telling compelling stories, bringing data ethics to the forefront, and collaboratively decreasing the biases in our data collection and analyses to draw meaningful conclusions.

About the Playbook and Its History
In August 2024, the Association for Institutional Research (AIR), EDUCAUSE, and the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) released the Change With Analytics Playbook, a comprehensive resource designed to support institutions in creating a culture and capacity for strategic data use.
Building on their 2019 Change With Analytics joint statement, the associations created the new playbook to help all higher education institutions make strides in leveraging data for strategic decision-making. The free resource contains 16 “plays” for data leaders to follow to make significant progress on their institution’s analytics goals.
