Jeanette VanGalder has retired as Chief Information Officer from the University of Northern Colorado after 34 years of service.
Richard Balsley retired May 30 from Darton State College in Albany, Ga. He worked in institutional research for 39 years, serving at five different institutions.
Craig W. Bowen passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 15. As he was an avid traveler, his ashes will be spread throughout the world at places of significance to him during his lifetime. Most recently, Craig worked at Old Dominion University as Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer for Special Projects. Prior to this role, he was Associate Director of Institutional Planning and Research at the University of Florida and served as the IPEDS Finance and Student Financial Aid Survey Director at the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) at the U.S. Department of Education. Craig held many degrees, including a Ph.D. from Florida State University and an M.B.A. from Johns Hopkins University. Craig was a yoga enthusiast and a serious dog lover and will be remembered as a “breath of fresh air” at Old Dominion. A memorial service will be held in Florida to celebrate his life.

Eric Godin, AIR Director of Education, completed the 2014 Boston Marathon representing the Gulf Winds Track Club from Tallahassee, Fla. (He also ran and finished the 2013 Boston Marathon). This was his fifth marathon and his personal best time is 2:58 (2013 Tallahassee Marathon). He has been running for eight years and also competes in triathlons, having finished a full Ironman and four half-Ironmans.
Lou Guthrie is now Director of the National Higher Education Benchmarking Institute at Johnson Country Community College in Overland Park, Kan. She was previously President of Guthrie Research Group, Inc.
Marian Pagano Matheson, former NEAIR President and Amherst College's Director of Institutional Research and Planning, passed away in April after a brief illness. Jane worked with many faculty and staff members on campus and her friends and colleagues chose to remember her with a tree planting on the UI campus.

Fletcher Carter, AIR member, passed away on February 22, 2014, at the age of 84. He held a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Florida State University. Fletcher was the Director of Institutional Research at Radford University for over 30 years. After his retirement, he worked with Roanoke City Schools. He is survived by his wife, Edith (Edie) Houston Carter, who along with Fletcher, was a charter member of SAIR.

John H. Pryor joined Gallup as Senior Research Scientist, Higher Education. John is leading the research and analysis for the Gallup-Purdue Index, which measures important higher education outcomes. He will play a pivotal role in expanding this research initiative to colleges and universities nationwide and will serve as a subject-matter expert for Gallup Education. Previously, John was director of the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) at UCLA. He will continue to work with his IR colleagues in his new role with Gallup.

Paul Jedamus, retired professor of Management Science and Business Statistics at the University of Colorado, passed away November 20, 2013, at the age of 90. Paul was an active AIR member, serving on the Board of Directors and chairing the Publications Committee. He received AIR’s Outstanding Service Award in 1985. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lu, and four daughters.

Jim Firnberg, an AIR Past President, charter and Distinguished member, has retired for the fourth and final time. For the past several years he has been serving as a part-time Special Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the LSU System. He was most recently involved as a member of the LSU Board of Supervisors Transition Advisory Team, studying ways to help LSU become more globally competitive. Jim planned to work until he was 80, but now thinks 78 is old enough to retire.

Phyllis Grummon has retired as Director of Planning and Education from the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) in Michigan.
Joseph L. Marks will retire at the end of 2013, after a 42-year career in higher education and a 30-year tenure at the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). Sam Lowther, Senior Institutional Research Analyst at Auburn University, passed away June 11, 2013, while vacationing with his family. Sam was an active AIR member who also served on the SAIR Board from 1998 to 2003 in many capacities, including President. He was a founding member of ALAIR and served as that organization’s President as well.
Sam was known for his special sense of humor and collegiality. Sandi Bramblett recalls, "I suspect that a good many of us who followed Sam as program chair for SAIR received a congratulatory message that ended with ‘Whatever you need, let me know.'”

Richard Reeves has accepted the position of IPEDS Program Director with NCES. Richard has long been a part of the IR community, working at Johns Hopkins and Cornell in institutional research and enrollment management. Richard was previously the National Student Clearinghouse’s first Director of Research and worked closely with institutions in that role. For a little over two years, he has been at the U.S. Energy Information Administration in the Department of Energy managing data collection and data sharing agreements. The IPEDS team is excited about what Richard’s combination of government, higher education research, and institutional experience can bring to NCES and the IPEDS team.
Cliff Adelman has published a first novel, The Russian Embassy Party. The story follows its characters along the edges of history from the summer of 1963 in Washington to the 1993 chaos of Yeltsin’s Russia. Sam Agronow passed away in November. Sam worked in IR at several institutions in California and served as President of the California Association for Institutional Research. He most recently was IR Director at St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif. He will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues.

John Kalb is retiring at the end of December from Southern Methodist University in Texas, where he is Director of Institutional Research. John has been an active AIR member for 25 years.
Gary Kappel is returning to the classroom full time as Professor at Bethany College in West Virginia. After serving as a faculty member in History for many years, he served in a variety of administrative appointments at the college, most recently as Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.
George Kuh, Chancellor's Professor Emeritus and Director, Indiana University-Bloomington, has been awarded the Robert Zemsky Medal for Innovation in Higher Education by the Executive Doctorate Alumni Advisory Board, of the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. Roy "Ike" Ikenberry has retired from Belmont University after nearly 12 years as Director of Institutional Research. Mary Lucus, formerly of Vanderbilt University, has replaced Ike in this capacity. Ike will finish serving his term as Past President of SAIR in September.

George Subotzky passed away July 3. George was a leading figure in IR in South Africa and a valued member of SAAIR. Most recently, he was Executive Director for Information and Strategic Analysis at the University of South Africa.

Ian Calvert will retire as Assistant Vice-President from Carleton University at the end of June, 2012.

Patricia Harvey, Director of Institutional Effectiveness at Richard Bland College, in Petersburg VA, will retire effective June 30, 2012 to pursue her love of teaching remedial college mathematics and business. Tyler Hart, formerly Director of Financial Aid at the college, will replace her.
Carl Larsen has accepted a position as Assistant to the President for Institutional Planning and Effectiveness, effective July 2, 2012, at Tusculum College in Tennessee. Previously, he was Assistant Dean for Policy and Planning, Penn State Altoona.

Daniel Teodorescu, Director of Institutional Research at Emory University, has accepted an offer from Institute of Higher Education (IHE) faculty to become an Institute Fellow. He also serves as adjunct professor at Pennsylvania State University in the Department of Educational Policy Studies.

Phyllis Mable passed away May 9, 2012, in Washington, D.C. According to friends and colleagues, Phyllis was a higher education pioneer and a legend in the student affairs profession. She was Vice President of Student Affairs at Longwood University in Virginia for nearly 20 years before her 2001 retirement.
Kurian Tharakunnel is now a Policy and Planning Analyst at University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Kim Van Vleet received his IR Certificate from Florida State University, and is now Director of Institutional Research at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey, Wash.
