DECEMBER 2012 NEWSLETTER, VOL. 32, ISSUE 12 | A SERVICE OF AIR SINCE 1987
IR Professionals' Familiarity with FERPA
FERPA - and changes to FERPA - can affect IR professionals’ work. A recent AIR survey explored whether members are up to date with FERPA. Among respondents, 45% indicated that understanding FERPA is essential to their work, and 40% indicated that some knowledge of FERPA is helpful. However, less than 40% of respondents reported high levels of comfort with FERPA. Individuals with recent FERPA training asserted the highest levels of confidence. Opportunities to Recognize Excellence

By Julie Carpenter-Hubin
2012- 2013 AIR President

Thanksgiving is past, but I remain ever thankful for my wonderful institutional research colleagues. I heard from several of you about partnerships between IR and IT on your campus following my last Board Corner – thank you for sharing. We are truly fortunate to work in a milieu that promotes collaborations and the sharing of ideas so that we can all move toward excellence.

You now have the opportunity to recognize excellence by nominating a colleague for one of the 2013 AIR member awards.

Creating Email Alerts in Google and Online Databases

Provided by Melanie Larson, Director of Institutional Research, Lasell College

This Tech Tip shows how to set up email alerts that search the Internet or online databases available in many academic libraries. Among other things, email alerts can help you find out when journals publish articles on topics of interest. They also help you stay "in the know" whenever your institution is mentioned in local media. I’ve found it useful to build alerts in both Google and in library databases because they yield different kinds of information. Both types of alerts are easy to set up, and the process is similar.
