New HR Reporting Categories for IPEDS Data

As of 2012-2013, IPEDS Human Resources occupational categories align with the 2010 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. A recent survey of AIR members explored awareness and knowledge of the new IPEDS HR categories. Forty-four percent of survey respondents reported that they are involved in their institutions’ conversions to the new IPEDS HR occupational categories, and 28% reported they are unaware of the new HR categories. Institutions appear to be at various stages of the conversion process, which involves recoding employees from the old IPEDS HR categories to align with the new SOC guidelines. IT and IR: The Dynamic Duo of Campus Analytics

By Julie Carpenter-Hubin
2012- 2013 AIR President

The political campaigning is finally over, and as someone from the great swing state of Ohio, I am delighted that the phone calls and negative advertisements have stopped! On the other hand, it’s been really interesting to see the attention paid to statistical analyses of polling data. New York Times blogger Nate Silver has emerged as the star political statistician; his accurate predictions demonstrating that data are more reliable than even very well-informed intuitions. Silver and a host of other political analysts are creating models that can be tested over time, improved, and perhaps applied in other arenas.

Predictive models, of course, are not new to institutional researchers. MORE

Getting to Know Cory Clasemann

Cory Clasemann is Assistant Vice President for Institutional Research at Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana. His recent transition from a private four-year university to a statewide community college prompted him to reflect on how data are used at different types of institutions, and how he is fulfilling his passion to work with at-risk students. Cory’s background in broadcast journalism has served him well in his quest to ask questions, seek answers, and develop “the ability to tell a story for a group of people who aren’t always in a position to convey it themselves.” MORE

TECH TIPS

Saving Excel Worksheets as PDFs using Macros

This Tech Tip was provided by Christina Butler, Research Analyst, Tufts University.

Our office produces many department-level and individual-level reports. These reports are often created in an Excel workbook containing worksheets named after each department or individual. For example, we create advising reports for all of our academic advisors in an Excel workbook that contains a worksheet for each individual advisor’s report. Because we give each advisor his/her own report as a PDF, we must save each workbook as a PDF file. MORE
