AUGUST 2012 NEWSLETTER, VOL. 32, ISSUE 8 | A SERVICE OF AIR SINCE 1987
How Will the Shopping Sheet Impact IR?
Institutional researchers are increasingly asked to produce consumer information in addition to their traditional roles in decision-support. The latest request to colleges and universities is the Shopping Sheet, a standardized format for financial aid offers. Even on campuses where the financial aid office handles the Shopping Sheet, IR may find these calculations to be important new sources of data for other campus reports and research projects. Anytime new data become available, IR professionals explore the potential for using the data in benchmarking, evaluating financial aid outcomes, as control variables or predictors, and more. Though participation in the Shopping Sheet is not mandatory at this time, be sure you are ready when questions about the Shopping Sheet arise on your campus. Read more about it and join other eAIR readers in discussing the new initiative on the AIR website.

Excitement High About Gates Foundation Talks

By Julie Carpenter-Hubin
2012- 2013 AIR President

I mentioned in my last Board Corner that I was planning to read Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow while on vacation. I can't recommend it highly enough! He explains the two systems that drive the way we think - one that is fast, intuitive, and emotional, and the other that is slower, deliberative, and more logical. MORE

Handy-Dandy SAS Functions, Part 3 of 3: Arrays with Do Over Loops

This Tech Tip was provided by Onecia Gibson, Research and Analysis Director Assistant for the Office of Institutional Research, University of Kentucky.

This third part of the three-part series on Handy-Dandy SAS Functions presents arrays with do over loops. SAS 9.3 Language Reference: Concepts defines an array as a grouping of variables that are arranged in a particular order and identified by an array name. Arrays with do over loops are useful when the same set of statements needs to be applied to several variables in a database. MORE

Committing to Quality: Guidelines for Assessment and Accountability
in Higher Education

Reviewed by Jonathan D. Fife

This pamphlet proposes a four-step process that an institution should use to fulfill its commitment to quality: (1) set clearly articulated ambitious goals for student achievement, (2) gather evidence of how successfully these goals are being achieved through measurement of actual performance in relation to these goals, (3) use this evidence - that is, link the results of the measurements to practices - to adjust practices to be more effective in achieving the institution's goals, and (4) make the evidence public - the institution's current performance - with what actions - specific responses - the institution will be taking to improve these results.
