This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Department: University Library Archives & Special Collections

The University Library provides academic support services for faculty and students. It enjoys a special role as a major intellectual and cultural presence for the academic community it serves. The Archives and Special Collections Department is a vital part of the University Library. Its function is to preserve and make accessible its unique archival, manuscript and rare book collections. The Department has the oldest and most unique one-of-a-kind materials in the Library. The Archives serves university students, the community and scholars by obtaining archival collections and rare materials from the campus, the CSU System and vendors.
Job dutiesMajor Job Duties:
Under the direction of the Director of Archives & Special Collections, the project archives assistant arranges and describes archival collections, develops and prepares descriptive finding aids and metadata records for the Archives. This includes the digitization of archival material and the cataloging of those digital items in ContentDM. Incumbent will possibly oversee and train student assistants. Makes decision about archival collection storage, preservation, participates in archival grant projects, meets with grant partners, contributes to archival outreach including social media.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Working knowledge of activities, policies and procedures specific to the Archives and Special Collections Department.
-Ability of physically process collections, generate finding aids and other cataloging records, use of software to facilitate cataloging including Archives Space and ContentDM.
-Ability to oversee student assistant
-Knowledge of the content of Archival finding aids relating to the project.
-Ability to work accurately with attention to detail; use direction in applying rules, regulations and procedures; communicate effectively using standard English.
-Ability to work independently using relevant knowledge to determine the best course of action regarding archival processing.
-Ability to fully utilize standard and non-standard features of desktop applications such as word processing and spreadsheets
-Ability to handle rare materials with necessary care..

Experience and Education:

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Education:  High school education or equivalent certification.

Preferred Education: Bachelors' degree, Master' degree in history, archival administration, library science or a related degree.

Required Experience:  Two to three years of related library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Preferred Experience:  One year of experience in an archival or special collections environment. Knowledge of the operations of an archives including use of all appropriate scanning technology and creation of archival finding aids. Public services experience.
Salary range$40,000 - $60,000
Salary benefitsSalary Range:

The salary range for this classification is: $2,740 - $4,840 monthly.
