Foundations of Data Governance

December 01-01, 2026

December 1, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. ET

PRICING: $225/$325 (MEMBERS/NONMEMBERS)

Effective data governance helps institutions transform fragmented, inconsistent, and difficult-to-access data into trusted information that supports institutional decision-making. In this interactive workshop, participants will examine what data governance is, and why it matters. Participants will explore the foundational structures needed to support governance, including committees, data domains, inventories, ownership and stewardship, data dictionaries, and institutional priorities. The workshop also introduces four dimensions of operational data governance (data lifecycle management, integrity, access, and use) and demonstrates how policies, processes, stewardship, and continuous improvement work together across these dimensions. Through higher education examples and scenarios, participants will consider common governance challenges and identify practices that can strengthen the responsible, consistent, and effective management and use of institutional data.

As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and value of data governance within a higher education institution.
  • Distinguish data governance responsibilities from the technical responsibilities typically associated with information technology.
  • Identify the foundational structures, roles, policies, and processes needed to support an institutional data governance program.
  • Describe how lifecycle management, data integrity, data access, and data use provide an organizing framework for operational data governance.
  • Analyze common institutional data challenges and identify governance policies, processes, or roles that could be used to address them.
