Data Literacy Institute: Course for Cross-Institutional Teams

The Data Literacy Institute, a 12-week program designed to enhance data literacy among higher education faculty, advisors, administrators, and staff, aims to cultivate the knowledge, skills, mindsets, and habits necessary for effective and ethical data use in decision-making processes. 

The curriculum is structured around AIR's data-informed decision-making process, encompassing six key sections: 

  1. Start with a Question: Identifying pertinent questions that data can help answer. 
  2. Connect Questions to Data: Linking these questions to relevant data sources. 
  3. Reveal Data’s Information: Analyzing data to extract meaningful insights. 
  4. Communicate Information: Effectively presenting findings to stakeholders. 
  5. Take Prudent Action: Making informed decisions based on data analysis. 
  6. Close the Loop and Continue It: Evaluating outcomes and fostering continuous improvement. 

Each week, participants engage in various activities, including one-hour tutorials, two-hour virtual seminars, and collaborative group capstone projects that address institutional challenges. The program emphasizes core principles such as understanding that data informs rather than dictates decisions, developing the ability to analyze and communicate data effectively, adopting mindsets that promote curiosity and integrity, and establishing habits that support ethical data use and sharing.
